Increased automation will eventually have a knock-on affect in DOs. Once there's enough automation capacity, RM will likely have packets sorted down to walk level, which will mean less indoor time in DOs and more outdoor time.

It's unlikely parcels would ever be segregated to duty level, although this would remove some indoor time in a DO it would be minimal across all deliveries and the impact on distribution would be significant and negate any savings , the increase in the number of Yorks needed to split the parcels into individual duties would mean far too many trucks, fuel and drivers.

Even a small office would need at least 20 Yorks. I can see how attractive the idea is to the suits because they have no concept of the practicalities.

Nope. Just needs a second machine which does the sorting to walk level. Operating on the same principle as the CSS, the larger machine sorts the packets into batches, the smaller machine sorts the contents of them batches into bags, one bag for each walk.

Never going to happen there is only so much time,yorkies,vehicles,drivers,money etc etc etc.

So are RM going to spend more millions on new additional machines in each MC that have the space to take them...to save not much time in a D.O.

Imagine having all your parcels for the day in one 11kg RM postal sack. Those were the days!

I volunteer to be sent back in time. I'd even go back to the horrible Christmas of 2010 when I had two packet bags rather than face four yorks this year.
