Re: Full Mast
I've never really understood the connection between England and St George or Scotland and St Andrew.
St David was Welsh so I get that and St Patrick was Irish but St George was a Palestinian/Greek serving in the Roman army who probably couldn't find England on a map and the stories of St Andrew visiting Scotland are highly dubious.

Re: Full Mast
Ours is at half mast following the death of Les McKeown.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Thought it was a simple query, I guess that the topic will now disappear into a multitude of tangents regarding history, mythology, religion, politics and Right-wing extremism. What's wrong with St George ? He is an adopted Patron saint of England, what exactly is your problem ? Do you have an alternative saint ? Or you just hate any form of patriotism ?Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑23 Apr 2021, 15:01I've never really understood the connection between England and St George or Scotland and St Andrew.

He used to live a couple of miles up the road from here.
I've heard some stories, I dare say most of them true.
How did we get here?
Edit.
Les McKeown not St George.

England adopting St George as a Saint who embodies the English character, since Scottish devolution, Northern Ireland and Welsh Assembly, regional flags and Saints have been a stronger focus of national pride, there is no shame in that.

Re: Full Mast
There is only 1 form of patriotism that I hate with a passion and that's one that doesn't recognise different people show their patriotism in different ways.
My own opinion is that everyone has a right to show their patriotic views in any way they want as long as it's peaceful, respectful and legal. Even if I disagree with their politics, they still have a right to protest, indeed the act of protest is in its own way patriotic in a democracy.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
