Dangerous dog law "should have gone further"

A Halstead postie has said that new laws on dangerous dogs have probably not gone far enough.

Changes to the Dangerous Dog Act that were announced on Friday mean that a dog owner could face prosecution if their animal attacks someone in their home or private property, unless the victim was a trespasser.

Steve McKenna, who has been a postie for 11 years, was bitten by a German shepherd dog in 2011 whilst he was doing his rounds.

Although he supports the new laws, he believes they should have gone further.

“We have a right as postmen to enter someone’s property to deliver their mail and we should have a right to deliver that mail safely."

The Halstead postie probably thinks that owning or possessing any dog should be illegal.

Chipping and licensing whilst it wouldn't stop attacks would certainly help in prosecuting owners, and investigating attacks and may cut down on the number of status dogs.

What should you do after being attacked by a dog? Take a photo of the dog? Unless there were witnesses how do you prove what happened? If there's a sign saying dog loose should you enter?

I remember dog licenses, 37½p annually after decimalisation, and the irresponsible dog owners simply didn't bother with them.

A dog bite is pretty distinctive, what with the puncture marks and bruising, the nurse or doctor treating it will recognize what it is,if there are any signs mentioning a dog loose or not you would be daft to go in,just endorse the mail accordingly and I personally would take a photo with my phone of the sign.Do not go in
