4 hours notice - any info?

Post by smith007 »

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help. I was employed as a Christmas Casual directly by Royal Mail for several weeks. One day we were sent home early because there was no more work. We were given 25 minutes notice. Some people complained. After that, each time we were sent home early we were given 4 hours notice. The manager said that he knew that he had to give us 4 hours notice. There's nothing in employment law that says an employer has to give 4 hours notice to vary a casual contract (I checked with ACAS).

Would somebody be able to explain:

1. Why does Royal Mail have to give 4 hours notice before sending the casual staff home?

2. Has this been introduced since Christmas 2012 when I last worked for Royal Mail?

3. Do I have a right to be paid for the full day on the day that the manager failed to give 4 hours notice?

Many thanks!

If it is true they do not follow the rules.

I have almost never been given any notice of having to go home. The most I have been given is about 1 hour and that was one day during the Christmas period just worked.

I have also been booked and turned away on the door without notice or instruction from Angard.

Does this mean I have to be given notice of more than 4 hours to be cancelled and if not should I still get paid. At the moment if I turn up and get turned away I get nothing - not even travel costs.

A four hour rule would not apply to casuals IMO, even AWR ones, as by our very nature we are hired by the hour, despite the fact we should be treated like regulars in all other respects. Playing fair/decency is another thing. last Christmas I was sent home in the same way as Verging, but in 2012 on the Sat before Xmas I was sent home early but paid in full (gaining about 2 and 1/4 hours) - different manager!
