Hello, I wonder if anyone can help. I was employed as a Christmas Casual directly by Royal Mail for several weeks. One day we were sent home early because there was no more work. We were given 25 minutes notice. Some people complained. After that, each time we were sent home early we were given 4 hours notice. The manager said that he knew that he had to give us 4 hours notice. There's nothing in employment law that says an employer has to give 4 hours notice to vary a casual contract (I checked with ACAS).
Would somebody be able to explain:
1. Why does Royal Mail have to give 4 hours notice before sending the casual staff home?
2. Has this been introduced since Christmas 2012 when I last worked for Royal Mail?
3. Do I have a right to be paid for the full day on the day that the manager failed to give 4 hours notice?
Many thanks!
