Driving hours - rules

Post by kstevens »

Hi! We've recently had an audit at our DO on driving and vans etc, and we've been told that we're not allowed to drive for more than four hours in a day, and that between the end of one day and the start of the next shift a person has to have an 11 hour break before they drive again.

Now we knew about the 11 hour rule, but the four hour rule now means that when a collection needs to be covered on overtime in the afternoon, the managers are refusing to pay anyone if it means they are driving over four hours in a day, so some are losing docket. Surely this can't be right? It means someone else has to complete the collection, especially if it is a late sweep (6:30pm onwards). But yet coach drivers can drive for five and a half hours and only need to take a half hour break before continuing to drive!

If someone can help shed some light as to what the rules are, and whether these are Royal Mail rules or are the law. Thanks :thumbup

If you go over 4 hours driving in a day you become a full-time driver for the whole of the week. Below 4hrs you are a part-time driver. There are limitations on how many hours a full-time driver can work (but I'm afraid I can't remember the exact details at the moment).
