How does the RM Processing/Distribution/MC/DO network work?

Post by shipmaster122 »

I must be becoming something of a bloody nuisance around here, what with all my posts!! :left:

Anyway, not sure if this question has already been asked, so I apologise if it has..

Just interested to get an understanding of how this "machine" (RM) works!

I notice when I look at the tracking on my Specials that they seem to go from Doncaster Mail Centre where they are forwarded to say North West Midlands MC, then onto the final DO, but is there somewhere inbetween (a national distribution centre?) where all of the domestic packages pass through but aren't scanned?..

Also, when you post something at the PO or drop it in a post box, why do they always go to a mail centre that isn't the one closest to where it was posted?

My nearest MC is Lincoln, but packages only seem to go through there (according to tracking) if they are incoming rather than outgoing. But I would have imagined when the little RM van :left: comes round emptying the post boxes that it would drive all the mail sacks to the nearest MC (Lincoln in my case), who would then collate all of the mail from many vans into a lorry going to a regional/national distribution centre?

Hope that isn't too confusing.. :confused Let me know if I need to make anything clearer!

As for the MC centre bit, the little red van (you started it! ) collects the mail, takes it back to the DO, it all goes onto a wagon and off to the MC that serves that DO. That MC then sorts all the mail for the first time and the mail goes off across the country accordingly, sometimes back to the same DO it just came from...

I see, thanks for that. So when the mail gets sorted for the first time at the mc - doncaster for me, do a number of lorrIes depart from there? I would have imagined to save costs they would have a national distribution centre that everythin passes through so only one lorry, but there you go.

shipmaster122 on a related note there was an episode of Top Gear which showed the basic process as well as a program that I think was on the Discovery channel, I think it was the "How Do They Do It?" program

Lincoln is not a MC. Your nearest MC is Doncaster.

If you post your Special items at a PO this will be the first point that the items are be scanned into the system. If the items are collected by one of royal mail drivers they will not be scanned into the system until they reach a mail center. The items will then go to the nearest collection hub (in your case Lincoln) they are then forwarded on to Lincoln's mail center which is Doncaster.
