Re: letter missing
There is no way of checking on what has happened to the letter. Royal Mail deal with millions of letter each day. The only way you can trace an item is with the Royal Mail Special Delivery service and as the letter is only a standard 2nd Class item you have better odds with winning the lottery than locating it.

Re: letter missing
That's right, depending on its importance send it Special or Recorded Delivery or get a Certificate of Posting, but above all ensure it's properly addressed and bears the correct postage.

Re: letter missing
You can get a form from a Post office Counter which asks for posting details (where and when posted,
description, addressee) and RM will try to find out what happened to it, but as the other replies have
said it's highly unlikely that it will be traced, and you will likely get a standard reply stating that Royal
Mail deals with millions of items daily and unfortunately some go astray.
You would not get any compensation unless you have a Certificate of Posting.
