I’ll ask again Martin, surely 2 people in a van on a Saturday means less people able to get the day off? Which blows a large hole in some of the attendance patterns?

From Martin's post

"If your small rural unit you may not do 4 into 3 but you will do 50% heavy and 50% light each day and you will only deliver first class on Saturdays."

If you're a small rural unit you'll probably have everybody 1 van per duty so how will that work, they'll be doing less unless they absorb some duties meaning loss of jobs.

They should have made the job Monday to Friday with Saturdays optional 15 to 20 years ago.Royal Mail were toying with it but because of the u s o agreement it got thrown out. The union didn’t want it because jobs could have been at risk. It would have save the company a packet. No shift patterns to cover, everyone on the same hours. Volunteers could have done the specials and 24 hour tracked with a skeleton staff.
The issue is, they are still obligated to deliver 1st class 6 days per week. That means there is a requirement to guarantee enough resourcing to get that put the door along with all the parcels. Making Saturdays voluntary sounds great in theory, but what if there isn't enough staff volunteer for any given Saturday?

You’re right that the obligation is still current. So while it’s good posties will get more Saturdays off, it seems all a bit of a mish mash. Like I said it was possible 20 years ago when postman didn’t get all the other jobs thrown on top. I still think the worst thing they ever did was bringing in van shares. Bikes were by far the most economical way of delivering the letters.and small packets. The bulk drivers would just have concentrated on the larger parcels. That has sailed now unfortunately.

PS there seems be a logic that this industry has always done one job one person.
This simply is not true.
When we operated two deliveries there was more first deliveries then there were second deliveries.
Different units range from 2 over 1 , to 7 over 1 second deliveries.
Meaning that for every 1 first deliveries you absorbed a number of first delivery routes on the second delivery.
Why ? Because there was less work on the second.
No, the workload that should have been done on the second was being overloaded onto the first. Or at least, that's what I heard.

The second delivery going. Well lets be totally honest here , the majoirity of offices did not have streaming agreements and took everything out on the first delivery in fact we had over 90% of the mail going on the first delivery which was scheduled to be completed by 0930 but was not being adhered too. The reality is that those offices who did not stream the mail so they had enough to warrent 1 over 1 second deliveries then they were getting more part timers introduced and some offices had for every first delivery they had 5 second deliveries.
The machine stops.

Given the poll result won't be know until the end of the week why do you think anything will have changed before the outcome is known? Even if it is a yes vote I doubt many offices, apart from the latest batch of pilot offices will see any changes for months.

They'll try to ram it in a quickly as possible IMHO. A local office has already started it and the result of the vote is not known yet.

They're going to want this well bedded in before 'peak'.

I think it'll be fully in place EVERYWHERE by mid September at the very latest.

The ODM had 35 pilot offices
DM26 has 240 advanced units.
That tells a story of how it’s coming in.
Has anyone in these 240 units got examples of how Saturdays are going? I think it is lost on some people just how much work is needing to get done on that day in particular with a much reduced head count.

Would you do overtime on a Saturday?
Not for hundred quid an hour my time on this earth is precious.

Which is the reason in itself that Saturdays will never be voluntary to work with the current USO. Most staff would never work a Saturday again given the choice, even the much maligned 'overtime monkeys'.

As all voting is done online, we will announce the results of the ballot at 17:00 tomorrow via a livestream with our General Secretary, Dave Ward, and our Deputy General Secretary (Postal), Martin Walsh.
The 'tomorrow' being Friday 29/5.

Saturday - half the staff are in and drivers do just 1st class letters and 24hr tracked/1st class parcels
Non drivers prep mech trays/d2ds
