Yes, your next stop was Postman Higher Grade, provided you could pass the test/exam. Done away with in the 2000 agreement. In my personal opinion I think that was much more destructive than equalising in the long run, especially since it lingers on as a synonym for the locker where all the extra responsibilities still exist but without the extra pay to make it worth the hassle.

It used to be that managers came up through the ranks. At least 7-8 years as a postman/woman, then at least another 3-4 years as a PHG before becoming an Acting PED, then being made substantive after proving you could do the job.

Operational grades (as of the 90s?) ran something like:
Cadet > postman/woman > temp PHG > PHG > Temp JV(?) > JV(?)

Acting JV was when a postie came to work wearing his best collar and tie and acted like he knew what he was doing, especially when making the tea for all the other "managers" every break time.

Haha that's what I thought, usually a s**t brown nosing postie, instructed by the real "managers" to prep duties etc, as it was in their own office generally treat by the rest with contempt
