Over the last three weeks Royal Mail and the CWU have been engaged in talks on pay and other topics set out in the agreement with EP Group.

Those talks have been constructive, and progress has been made. Both parties have recognised though that further time is needed to reach full agreement. Negotiations will therefore continue over the next two weeks with the joint aim of reaching agreement before Friday 30 May 2025.

We are committed to delivering a fair and equitable pay agreement that ensures we can maintain the best terms and conditions in the industry. We do, however, need the pay deal to be affordable, after two years of significant losses and with our costs continuing to rise.

We will keep you updated. In the meantime, thank you for your continued hard work and commitment to the business.

Key words are “affordable”, “significant losses” and “costs continuing to rise”

I sense a 1.5% pay rise is coming.

So at £50 million for each 1%, that's 13% and 17% and the cwu want 24% over 3 years. :hmmmm

Apologies if this thread turned political as I thought it might end with the first point that I made, but we all have our own views.

From everything that we have seen over the past few years a 'decent' pay rise is unlikely unless we are prepared to fight for it. RM has a long history of dragging things out and pushing it to the wire in the hope that we settle for whatever crumbs they offer at last minute. Suggesting that "they need the deal to be affordable" is designed to lower our expectations and soften up the members by framing it as the best that we can get right now.

Instead of trying to build any leverage in the pay talks the CWU is talking like it is managing expectations instead by repeating RM's line about affordability and losses. The CWU has not published or provided members with a clear, quantifiable pay demand (there was a rumour that they were asking for 10%) but without a clear benchmark from official comms, its difficult to hold the CWU accountable.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I don't think even Tweedledee and Tweedledum are stupid enough to think they'll get 24%, unless it's at the expense of loads of terms and conditions.
