I would opt for the 4 day week but the way that it is currently being dressed up by the CWU is not win-win. It is like choosing the best of the worst available options on show.

The company has spent billions in automation and it is not going to stop investing in ideas and processes which will inevitably lead to less indoor work and more outdoor work for posties. We have already seen our start and finish times negatively impacted by these changes so we need something to counteract this with and for me the only real solution as regards a better work-life balance and improved productivity in RM is the shorter working week.

Some people might suggest that it won't stop some posties dragging things out but if you had an earlier finish time they wouldn't need to. You don't put the cart before the horse. If the 3 days worth of mail isn't being completed in the time then surely the greater long term solution is not to give posties even more hours (on the same pay) to help fill that gap with more work - it is to recruit more f**ing posties!!
They gonna cut staff by vr or natural retirement isn't that what all this is about more work with less staff its a business not a service whether you like it or not.
Job cuts will come from not delivering 2nd class everyday.
Not by giving us more work in the same time.
Our call rate for each address will decrease over the course of the six days as we may have been going to some addresses five or six days a week in the current format but may only be going there 3 times with the proposed USO design.
The longer days are designed to counteract the increase call rates on the days we are in without making the duties longer.
In reality to make it achievable they may have to put extra resources in to make it failsafe.
You can have an achievable workload and job cuts with watering down the USO.
This is the balance that has to be struck and what the trials are about.

Who gives a s**t about having extra saturday off I prefer a wed or thursday off.
For many people the extra family time or ability to go to football every week is a huge incentive.
I would say that is the case for a huge percentage of members.

By watering down the USO savings will come naturally as less staff will be required to attend on any given day.
In a way we have a better opportunity to make duties more achievable and attendance patterns more appealing as the overall headcount will be less.
Just about getting it right and improving conditions and pay at the same time.

It seems plain to me the new system is all about reducing the costliest part of RM "the final mile" delivery.

Reduce the delivery staff while getting the same output is the goal and yet again we will be tasked with upping our game to stop the company going under.

According to the USO trial office update. The most popular schedule was the 2 in 5 weeks.
The 2 in 5 week option seems to essentially be a 4 day week for part timers and they get ALL Wednesdays and ALL Saturdays (and Sundays) off.

I wouldn't be surprised if this encourages some full timers to drop down to being part time.
I look into that. Looks like ur right.
The issue i have is. I noticed that all the full timers are on the same duty every day they're in.
Which u can't do. Because a walker has to jump between 2 van shares. A driver has to do packets and parcels for 2 duties.

Yes like any private businesses the aim is going to be turning over a profit.
If they turn over a healthy profit the chances of us getting better conditions and pay increase.
You can have a decent well paid job and a profitable company at the same time.
The union are there to make sure we get our end of the deal.

Correction - the business has made the USO look financially unsustainable because they want rid of it. These reforms are the thin edge of the wedge for more cutbacks in future. The company stands to save millions from not delivering the mail. And It's more than just about pay - we need rid of these daft seasonal variations and a shorter working week to make these longer outdoor spans bearable, especially if we have longer days.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

The USO in its current format is financially unsustainable
If we can have a revised format that increase the profits of the company the union have a better position to negotiate from in regard to our pay and conditions.
That's just a reality
Correction - the business has made the USO look financially unsustainable because they want rid of it. These reforms are the thin edge of the wedge for more cutbacks in future. The company stands to save millions from not delivering the mail. And It's more than just about pay - we need rid of these daft seasonal variations and a shorter working week to make these longer outdoor spans bearable, especially if we have longer days.
So the company hasn't been losing money consequetively for the past few years then. If we carry on delivering all types of letters to every door for six days week the chances of us getting decent pay rises and improved conditions diminish considerably.
Seasonal variations have been halted for now.
Most other European countries have had some sort of USO reform because of letter decline.
At some point we were going to have to change to deal with the decrease in that sort of workload as the revenue from letters has fallen rapidly.
Or is that all a big conspiracy?
