Back to the seniority stuff...still need to clarify something...

From the CWU Live last night....

Martin Walsh: "(When a PT postie is working extra hours) there should be a case going to the manager that THAT postie should be made up, that should be done on seniority. There's difficulties with this as I might be a postie that does a regular 20 hours a week overtime, but not the senior one, but seniority is what we've agreed so the most senior PT has the opportunity to get an increase in hours".

For me - this wasn't entirely clear what he meant...

So basic question - who would get offered the uplift in hours - the PT postie doing the extra hours, or the PT postie who isn't doing any overtime who started working for Royal Mail first?

I assume it's the longer serving postie that isn't doing the overtime that will get the offer. It's just confusing because Martin started by saying that THAT postie doing the overtime should be made up.

If it is offered to the postie who came through the door first - then no complaints - that's how it should be done.

I've highlighted this because a part-timer who has worked at the business for years wants to know. He has asked his manager for full-time work and is annoyed that some part-timers who have only worked for the business for just over a year have been working full-time every single day, while he gets asked on odd occasions to work full-time.

Just seems odd to me that

1. revisions get pulled from most offices, and then
2. the union decides, after ignoring it for years, that they want thousands of posties to be made up to full-time

How will this affect seniority and the allocation of duties in the future? RM are obviously going to push forwards with method change which will obviously change the duty structures, but it cannot be fair that someone who has just walked into the business jumps on a fixed round that they have not signed for over someone who has been working full time as a reserve for years.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

The PT to FT should be done in seniority order. If your office has got separate seniority lists for PT and FT, the ones that have now gone FT will be inserted into the FT seniority list in the appropriate places, so people will drop down the FT seniority list, by different amounts depending on how many of the PT to FT have joined the FT seniority list who are higher up the FT seniority list than they are.
