Royal Mail to start drug and alcohol testing?

Logic tells me that any sort of testing would either be pre employment checks or post incident checks. All would need to be agreed with the CWU. I'd doubt there would be any sort of random drug or alcohol testing done in any sort of scale as the cost would be prohibitively expensive. But then again this is the Royal Mail, so daily tests 3 times a day.

I think people are overreacting about what actually could be a help to people with serious addiction problems. Instead of instantly punting people with an addiction, there is a chance to,
A: Stay employed
B: Get better
C: Time to look for employment elsewhere if that suits you when on this program

I would think this rehab service is there for staff that clearly come to work under the influence. I doubt it is there to catch people that had a beer or two the night before or puffed on a spliff.

Depends on how strong the alcohol content was.

It doesn't matter how long ago, how strong the booze was, what sex or body type you are in the slightest, as if if you show positive in a test that's it, you've failed the test.
What other criteria could RM possibly use? "Yeah he's a big burly bloke so probably not affected at all"?
Someone having a personal input to the result of the test would be a green light for the boss's mate to get off.

For the record I have seen numerous times guys coming into work half drunk and still rotten with alcohol right before they go out and driven the vans if testing stops these people then bring it in.

If someone is visibly unfit to drive, do we really need tests to intervene? Are the keys handed out by a vending machine? If you see something, speak up on behalf of public safety.

I recieved a blue card letter from RM yesterday, announcing drug & alcohol testing and if want help for addictions now is basically the time to come clean. Had all the contact info on there.

They’re rolling it out slowly then? Must be judging reaction/success rate. Success for them being, ability to sack people quickly.

Says it is part of a phased implementation.
