I'm saying this in jest, but somehow I don't see a push for who gets chosen for THIS exercise to be decided by seniority.

In all seriousness, I'm surprised it's taken so long for them to consider this.

I knew a lad with young wife and family killed by a drugged up driver. Posties come into the office stinking of booze and people think its funny. I don't get it.

So with the introduction of testing, coming in still under the influence or smelling of it, would be grounds to test an individual. All other testing has to be transparently random.

The business can immediately sack someone who fails the test, which is no bad thing.

It doesnt really matter to the business if a few new contracted workers are caught in the cross fire. They will be replaced like for like. Replacing the legacy contracts with new contracts is the agenda we all know.

There is certainly an agenda by RM towards replacing legacy contracts with new contracts but the company has a corporate responsibility to ensure that staff shouldn't be driving if managers believe that they have had a skinful the night before. There are no excuses for this one.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Whilst driving is the obvious safety breach whilst over the limit, we work in what could be described as a type of warehouse environment, with people pushing containers with heavy loads down narrow corridors etc. I think the days of letting people who are little worse for wear after the weekend just keep their heads down, not just in RM I add, are numbered.

The funny thing about what you say is, other than the posties who desperately need that job, nobody else really cares about keeping the job :d'oh!

Isn’t that most posties? Wouldn’t most posties be in a very sticky situation if they lost their job tomorrow? Also, good luck getting another driving related job if you lost a job at RM through drink driving.

Most posties employed these days aren't just 'pushing' yorkies. Most posties in the real world are employed on a "driving/delivery" role.

The limit can be set as low as 0.02 so not a zero tolerance but pretty much that.
They also would have to test drivers and non drivers as it would be discrimination to not do so.
If a non driver tests positive for drugs then I assume he will be gone but what if he's had a few pints the night before butb is clearly unaffected next day what will happen there as he aint breaking the law as alcohol is legal and as long as he aint paralytic.

I suppose that in that instance (supposing they really want shot of this person), they could argue that they are putting other staff at risk due to their judgement being impaired. They could also argue that their work wasn’t up to scratch because they were impaired and that they couldn’t send someone over the alcohol/drug limit out to face customers.

In short, non drivers aren’t in a position of safety.

Define "clearly unaffected". RM aren't going to judge individuals on a case-by-case basis, hence the basic rule, which RM can make as stringent as they wish.

I'm almost certain there is a zero tolerance rule about being under the influence of drink and drugs in our contracts.

Would you be under the influence of drink after say 3 pints at say 6 oclock in the evening followed by say 8 hours sleep.
