Re: Manager calling on rest week
Just the stock mentality of a sizeable minority of staff across RM - and on this forum - to accuse managers of bullying and harassment even over a phone call to them on their personal mobile. Just crazy. Whereas I approach things in exactly the same way as you and reap similar benefits.heraldmoth wrote: ↑24 Aug 2024, 17:55Where does it say harass? Managers should not be contacting you out of hours. I realise that you think that’s not reasonable and by you being reasonable and answering the phone you are gaining work.Smoothbackground wrote: ↑24 Aug 2024, 20:52Just the stock mentality of a sizeable minority of staff across RM - and on this forum - to accuse managers of bullying and harassment even over a phone call to them on their personal mobile. The truth of the matter is that they will cut off that work when it suits them regardless of whether you are Bob who never answers his phone or Daisy who always answers and agrees to work 48hrs in a day.
Be prepared for that so that it doesn’t hit you like a brick when it happens.

Re: Manager calling on rest week
I’d be just as willing to take a brief call on my day off about something from which I didn’t stand to gain, eg, “Oh, did you put the box keys back in the cabinet when you finished on Saturday?” or “Can you remember whether you had an item for z?” Indeed, I have had several such calls. Sometimes I have called back later the same day as I was busy, but other times I have taken the call. In a similar fashion, I have called managers on my day off to check something etc.Barnacle wrote: ↑24 Aug 2024, 21:07Managers should not be contacting you out of hours. You are right, of course overtime can never be guaranteed, though restrictions on overtime would be edicts from the higher-ups, not from our local managers, and restrictions on overtime are happening at neighbouring DOs right now.

Same, regarding the mentality, that became apparent when I was around 3 weeks in and settled as a newbie and became aware of how things were, I'm "old guard" now 25 years in and it still prevails but one thing I remember from when I first started part time was being told quite aggressively by some cock that overtime was allocated on seniority so if I wanted any I was bottom of the picking order, didn't give a flying at the time as I took this job along with a big drop in pay to get away from the daily hassle and grief that I had in my previous employment, it was certainly an eye opening culture shock.Smoothbackground wrote: ↑24 Aug 2024, 20:52Just the stock mentality of a sizeable minority of staff across RM - and on this forum - to accuse managers of bullying and harassment even over a phone call to them on their personal mobile. Re: Manager calling on rest week
Great minds think alike! Think I may have misled slightly though — what I meant was that by being “flexible” in taking their calls, working OT, etc,, I reap the benefits of flexibility back, not just financial (OT) either — nicking the odd hour here and there and getting to knock off early, occasionally clocking out on the PDA and shooting off home when I do LATs and from a far-flung rural DP rather than returning to the office to clock out, swapping rest days, and so on. I am still acclimatising to the culture!ted_e_bear wrote: ↑24 Aug 2024, 21:50Same, regarding the mentality, that became apparent when I was around 3 weeks in and settled as a newbie and became aware of how things were, I'm "old guard" now 25 years in and it still prevails but one thing I remember from when I first started part time was being told quite aggressively by some cock that overtime was allocated on seniority so if I wanted any I was bottom of the picking order, didn't give a flying at the time as I took this job along with a big drop in pay to get away from the daily hassle and grief that I had in my previous employment, it was certainly an eye opening culture shock.Smoothbackground wrote: ↑24 Aug 2024, 20:52Just the stock mentality of a sizeable minority of staff across RM - and on this forum - to accuse managers of bullying and harassment even over a phone call to them on their personal mobile. Not necessarily. I get my walk share to drop me off at home from time to time, and I return the favour. If you are still working your full hours, you aren’t part of the ghosting problem they are trying to crack with a sledgehammer.Seymour Buts wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 17:25Not necessarily. I very rarely, if ever, have undelivered parcels. And yes, I park the van on my own private land.Bounced_Czech wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 09:51What do you do with the undeliverable LATs? Re: Manager calling on rest week
How is it ghosting? To my understanding, ghosting is when someone is paid OT even though they are still within their contractual hours. It is dishonesty on the part of employee and manager. There is no OT involved in the scenario I describe. The exact hours worked are always recorded. The only leeway in the scenario I describe is being allowed to clock out on my PDA 10 or so miles away from the office.Barnacle wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 09:53Also, what’s being described is ghosting and there are big moves ahead to end this.Bounced_Czech wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 09:51What do you do with the undeliverable LATs? You don’t work for the business anymore, CarryingMgMt, so I don’t know why I’m even bothering explaining. As you may know, LATs don’t come in until about 1.30 pm. And I’m not on a dedicated LAT duty, I just do them a few times a week.Bounced_Czech wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 18:53Smoothbackground wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 18:08just maybe it’s because I start at 7.00 am and I drive it to work in the morning?Bounced_Czech wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 18:02How do you bring the van back to the DO in the morning if you are on LATs?Smoothbackground wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 17:52I very rarely, if ever, have undelivered parcels. Is that a London thing?just maybe
(PS: No, London depots have dedicated LAT duties starting at midday, whereas at my DO — not in London — we absorb most LATs among the DPRs, with a few of us usually doing the remaining (usually rurals and the town centre.)
