Re: 1000 redundancies
I take it this example is with all the large packets already being delivered by a DPR driver?

You missed doing D2Ds and stuck in trafficPOP2022 wrote: ↑04 Apr 2024, 14:35I sometimes get asked to take just parcels on 2 duties, that more than fills my time.
3 duties of parcels and 1st class, also will be emptying boxes and customer collections. In addition will be doing all specials and redeliveries from the day before![]()
Average duty in my place gets 80 parcels. So 3 x 80 = 240
Let’s say a route with 700 drops gets 70 1st class = 210
Collections will be about 12 for 3 rounds
As I always say, get a manager to show you how it’s done and then I’ll happily do it![]()

Seymour Buts wrote: ↑04 Apr 2024, 15:51In principle, I'm not that opposed to it. It seems the lesser of potential evils when they were on about dropping the letters to three days. Frankly, from a pragmatic point of view, it's impossible to argue the letters justify the current 6 day USO. I had 7 letters in a road on 80 houses Tuesday. It's an extreme example admittedly, as said road rarely gets much post, but the amount of letters now is declining at a huge rate. Our second mech bundles now are sorted into the pigeon holes now as they're usually a handful of letters. According to the forcasts Royal Mail are doing, they anticipate they only need 50% of us on a Saturday. Which means one in two Saturdays off for those of us that want it. Combined with no compulsory redundancies, and a more clear picture to how it's actually going to work in practice, it doesn't sound too bad.
There is a reason why the bosses made all our duties bigger and that was to accommodate the lack of mail. We still get D2Ds every week so every house would still need to be hit and delivering every other day would obviously mean delivering twice as many every day. The other extreme example is when there is a bulk posting and mail for every house on one day. Like these polling cards for example. We get three days to do them but in this model we would be expected to do them in just two. What happens then after they have let thousands of staff go? As a business we rely entirely on overtime but factor in the later finishes and few posties are going to want to work past 5pm in winter... That's the white elephant in the room that the business are completely ignoring.
Whilst I don't really agree with any reduction in the USO because the company is still profitable, what the company are proposing here is failing the mail in stealth mode. The postie who is delivering the parcels and 1st class letters on 3 duties, for example, what do you think won't be delivered? The Tracked parcels which are now a recorded metric on our PDAs or letters??

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

You will still be working your same hours. Why would you end up in hospital?roadrunner bill wrote: ↑04 Apr 2024, 15:20So sad, the end of royal mail deliveries, if this comes in, cause everyone will be in hospital from this torture...
Should rename the company.. Amazon, they do the same... crucify their staff to death.

I think he was speaking metaphorically Lou. It's not a case of just working your hours anymore as the business is trying to squeeze as much juice out of us as possible. Those who are taking their time everyday could be brought into the managers office for a "conversation" about their performance whilst others are still coming in early and rushing round to complete. I often see the Amazon driver running round.

Couriers are likely rushing around to earn more money though I’m guessing. Either way, RM can come up with as many bizarre money saving schemes as they like. That is above my pay grade.postslippete wrote: ↑04 Apr 2024, 17:38

Going back to the plan and the graphic on page 1 - so no DSA on a Saturday? This is pretty much what they were after in their original pitch to change the USO then, as first class stamped letters are like hen’s teeth on a Saturday, so it will just be a parcel day really. I wonder if they made that clear in their proposal? Also what happens on rural deliveries? We are pretty much 50:50 here between town and rural.
I still can’t see the government signing off on any of this in an election year.

Re: 1000 redundancies
So they are basically getting round it by delivering a handful of first class letters on a Saturday? Got to hand it to them, that is a smart way of getting what they wanted anyway with the minimum of compromise on their part. Essentially Saturdays will be parcels only in the proposed scenario.claretandblue wrote: ↑04 Apr 2024, 18:12Doesn't need government sign off.LouBarlow wrote: ↑04 Apr 2024, 18:01Couriers are likely rushing around to earn more money though I’m guessing. Re: 1000 redundancies
Currently our walks are so fcked, we are generally doing 1 or 2 loops of mail per day ( up to a week's worth of mail ), rest of the time is spent making sure we get all the tracked/specials/collections and customer collects done.
130 Tracked today on my PDA...
Have our break half way through the outside work. Frames are a mess, struggling to push more mail into each slot. Manager seems disinterested and I no longer worry about it.
Not sure about having to know an extra 'route' inside out and switching back and forth is going to improve things.

Re: 1000 redundancies
Very much like my office. We're even, horror of horrors, started failing complete duties including all of the Tracked items. Boss has given up, just tells us to do the best we can with multiple days' mail, staff have given up caring anymore. We're severely understaffed and yet RM's latest proposals for change vow to CONTINUE delivering 1st class mail 6 days per week. If only we were anywhere close to doing that currently.JKSmudge wrote: ↑04 Apr 2024, 18:47Currently our walks are so fcked, we are generally doing 1 or 2 loops of mail per day ( up to a week's worth of mail ), rest of the time is spent making sure we get all the tracked/specials/collections and customer collects done.
