Get to know your customers folks. Especially those who get parcels every day. I don’t doorstep parcels, but never bring back more than 1-2 and frequently get over 100 tracked a day. Storage boxes, under cover in back gardens, sheds, greenhouses. If it is in a waterproof bag, clothes get dropped over gates if they are locked. There is a bit of common sense needed when it comes to such matters, especially when you now have photographic proof of leaving an item. 0 complaints here in all the years of doing this.

That said, I *never* sign for recorded deliveries for any customer, as some here still claim to do.
Surprised you admit to dumping parcels over customers gates, I'm not sure that's official "best practice"?
Best practice is delivering what my customers want within limits. As I said, clothes in waterproof packaging will, as a last resort, go over a gate. It is the least likely option to be fair. I know my customers enough to have a safe place more secure and under cover. Most of the time, I only 739 signature parcels, which I will never leave.

I couldn’t careless what you do,but you are openly admitting to doorstepping🤦🏻‍♂️😂😂

But Lou doesn’t mention the word “doorstep” or doorstepping in any of their posts above. Utilising a safe place, which is what they are doing, is best practice and best customer service.

The sender is the customer, not the recipient

And they dont want their parcels thrown over someones fence - no matter what the recipient tells you

The recipient puts in a 'denial of receipt' and all the evidence Royal Mail has to show their customer, who paid us to deliver the parcel, is what? A photo of the parcel over a gate? Grounds for compensation. Youve cost the company money. No thanks for 'first time delivery'.

Its noticed that you are always somehow there to back Smoothbackground up and vice versa but cmon Lou

Absolutely. There is a reason why we are now taking photos of every parcel that we deliver and it's due to denial of receipt. Whilst more posties are dumping parcels in blue bins and throwing them over the back gate to prevent re-delivery we need to be careful of leaving parcels anywhere where they can be damaged or lost. The only real exceptions are if there is a notification on the PDA or a note where they want their parcel being left as it covers our ass.
It actually doesnt cover our arse. The recipient could actually put 'leave in the middle of the driveway/leave it in front view of everyone on the steps' as their safeplace instruction and if we followed that and anything happened we would be hauled in. They can literally write anything they want in that box. Theres nothing monitoring or prohibiting the instruction before we read it to act upon it.

Its still down to us deeming it a safe place or not, not the recipient. Following the instructions of the safeplace doesnt excuse us from leaving it somewhere it can be easily stolen or damaged.

The safeplace instruction doesnt act as 'full responsibility' on the part of the recipient either. Thats still on us.
Have you actually left safe place instructions? It clearly states that you are accepting responsibility for doing so as the recipient.

As I said, I put myself in the place of my customer at all times. Would I rather have a pair of trousers in a waterproof bag dropped over my locked gate as a last resort, instead of rearranging delivery and waiting in for my postie? Yes I would. The only grievance I have had from customers on my round, is when I refuse to sign for recorded delivery items as instructed over a RING doorbell.

The app itself gives you leave to ignore the safe place instructions if you deem them unsafe. When you click the reason for not delivering, you can select ‘safe place not safe’. So you are free to ignore some of the lunatic safe places suggested by a customer.

That is true, but why wouldn’t you want to keep your customer happy? They are accepting responsibility so if you have photographic proof and it goes missing, it is on them. That is also why it is crucial to scan the item as close to the door as possible for location tracking.

As someone has already pointed out, the person sending the item is the customer. If the ‘safe place’ does not seem safe, don’t leave it. Card then and take it back because even with GPS and a pic, there will always be a person who claims DOR.

Yes, but I don’t have any personal interaction with the person sending the item. If the recipient is paying for the postage indirectly, I will class them as my customer, even though you are technically correct.

I think what a lot of you are not grasping is:

Royal Mail's operating systems & procedures are NOT meant to make logical sense to the average Postie.

THEY'RE JUST DESIGNED TO MAKE MORE MONEY! :no no

And remember You can do anything YOU like while you're out Delivering ...... Until something goes wrong ....and then it's YOUR fault! :left:

I think if you bear these two points in mind it covers most of the BS that crops up daily in this Business. And console yourselves that this job is not really that important. God help us if the Business was actually responsible for something important, like delivering critical aid to a war zone! :cuppa

What are you on about mate? Nowadays most NHS letters (The ones with the Blue Logo) are glorified mailshots from the NHS offering Flu and Shingles Jabs. You might be a bit out of touch since leaving the Business? You might get one for every DP on your Duty!

Most Posties recognise the Return Address of their Local Hospitals and still endeavour to deliver them ASAP despite the incompetent instructions from Bonus Hunting Managers. :speak to the hand

The point I was trying to make is that Management, at all levels, wouldn't still be in employment if THEY were responsible for running a Company that had an Important role such as Famine Relief or Humanitarian Aid. :cuppa

I hear the managers at your old gaff have asked you to stop forlornly hanging around the yard gates every morning and disrupting operations, and also that they have warned you they’ll be involving the police if you try sneaking up into the canteen again! Apparently IB are coming to check you have returned all items of uniform and have no RM equipment at home.
