And again. Are we in kindergarten class? No.

It’s all very well throwing a waterproof parcel over a fence if you know the recipient. In my early days, I got bollocked for doing this as , apparently, a dog got hold of it and ripped it to shreds. I won’t do that now unless there’s an instruction to do so on the PDA, which is ‘ supposed’ to cover you in case of anything happening to it.

Not patronising at all. Just helpful advice to give you more of a chance at earning that gold star.
Been told in our office if we get a gold star 3 days in a row then our COM will award us little cartons of milk with a story during our meal relief. I’m not 5 years old though so I’m not sure I’m interested.

Get to know your customers folks. Especially those who get parcels every day. I don’t doorstep parcels, but never bring back more than 1-2 and frequently get over 100 tracked a day. Storage boxes, under cover in back gardens, sheds, greenhouses. If it is in a waterproof bag, clothes get dropped over gates if they are locked. There is a bit of common sense needed when it comes to such matters, especially when you now have photographic proof of leaving an item. 0 complaints here in all the years of doing this.

That said, I *never* sign for recorded deliveries for any customer, as some here still claim to do.

Someone doing the job properly and actually delivering first time springs to mind here. More should aspire to be like this.

Surprised you admit to dumping parcels over customers gates, I'm not sure that's official "best practice"?

I’m not sure why it’s a brag to say you only bring a couple of parcels back each day? We’re not paid a bonus to deliver 1st time and a customer being out is not something we have control of so it doesn’t matter how many parcels you bring back.

Sadly, we are going the way of all the other gig couriers that seem to be doorstepping parcels. They only get paid when they actually get rid of the parcels 1st time whereas we don't. You are unlikely to be conducted for bringing parcels back but you could if you left a parcel that went missing. At Amazon if customers make complaints, you get docked pay. Regardless of what COMs say the safest and best way is to card the customer.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

At Amazon, if you don’t meet first-time delivery metrics you are sent for retraining (ie you lose a day’s pay - or more). 99% of customers want - and expect - their parcels to be delivered even if they’re out. And no, you’re not paid by the parcel for Amazon either. If you did, you’d earn far more than the variable daily rate!

Best practice is delivering what my customers want within limits. As I said, clothes in waterproof packaging will, as a last resort, go over a gate. It is the least likely option to be fair. I know my customers enough to have a safe place more secure and under cover. Most of the time, I only 739 signature parcels, which I will never leave.

The problem is it’s all good leaving a parcel in a safe place until there’s a problem or it goes missing then you’re the one who has to explain where it is. Leaving a card and bringing a parcel back is a pain but you can’t get in trouble for it or at least not yet anyway.

The sender is the customer, not the recipient

And they dont want their parcels thrown over someones fence - no matter what the recipient tells you

The recipient puts in a 'denial of receipt' and all the evidence Royal Mail has to show their customer, who paid us to deliver the parcel, is what? A photo of the parcel over a gate? Grounds for compensation. Youve cost the company money. No thanks for 'first time delivery'.

Its noticed that you are always somehow there to back Smoothbackground up and vice versa but cmon Lou

Absolutely. There is a reason why we are now taking photos of every parcel that we deliver and it's due to denial of receipt. Whilst more posties are dumping parcels in blue bins and throwing them over the back gate to prevent re-delivery we need to be careful of leaving parcels anywhere where they can be damaged or lost. The only real exceptions are if there is a notification on the PDA or a note where they want their parcel being left as it covers our ass.

It actually doesnt cover our arse. The recipient could actually put 'leave in the middle of the driveway/leave it in front view of everyone on the steps' as their safeplace instruction and if we followed that and anything happened we would be hauled in. They can literally write anything they want in that box. Theres nothing monitoring or prohibiting the instruction before we read it to act upon it.

Its still down to us deeming it a safe place or not, not the recipient. Following the instructions of the safeplace doesnt excuse us from leaving it somewhere it can be easily stolen or damaged.

The safeplace instruction doesnt act as 'full responsibility' on the part of the recipient either. Thats still on us.

Obviously, some common sense is required where we leave parcels but if the recipient actually sets a 'safe place' and the parcel was stolen from there then unfortunately it is their responsibility. It might not prevent us from being 'hauled in' but no action should be taken. It is only when the parcel was left anywhere where they didn't specify that they would be able to receive a refund or replacement.
