If you hand over the goods to the customer does it really matter if they done the squiggle?

If it’s the right name at the right house and it will post through I will. Half the time I’ll give them a knock and if they’re out I’ll post it in. Passports don’t need a signature so I don’t see why birthday cards would. They’d have probably just sent it tracked 24 if they could get it from the post office…
Exactly, tracked product would be ideal for lots of items posted in post offices, but it's not available.

Oh yeah talking about specials FFS get the 1pm deadline extended to say 5pm it's also well outdated, or even offer it as a premium like sat guaranteed, it's made it even worse recently as we're temporarily on summer attendance.

Just takes one complaint and one nasty manager to get rid of you
is it worth your job?
If they haven't got rid of staff in the past for it....how can they get rid of people now....unless they warn us now that it will result in a sacking and get us to sign something saying we understand.

People have done a lot worse than sign for things and they've not been sacked.

I am sure Royal Mail want us to door step, sign for things, skip van checks.... taking all these shortcuts probably saves 20 to 25 minutes per day and therefore 20-25 minutes more work gets done....

Managers love to tell posties that ______ postie is faster than them and can do a round in time...... and that named posties is always someone I know who takes all the shortcuts.

Managers aren't that ignorant to what goes on. They will only tell you off for taking a shortcut if it causes a problem / if there is a complaint.

On one of our routes is a guy who will sign for everything with a big "X" then says "huh huh that's not my signature I'll be able to get me money back." According to the duty holders he regularly tells them how he swindles sellers by claiming Royal Mail faked his signature, or given it to some random person in his garden without checking ID....
So what's the actual point of it? We don't know that's their signature and they've no obligation to prove it is. Might as well sign for it ourselves

I rarely sign for things myself. I don’t have my own round so I don’t know who would complain if I did, easier to just play it safe.

There’s only one exception - when I’m delivering to a busy doctors surgery. There’s only one woman on reception and i I don’t have time to stand there waiting while Gladys tells her about her angina, so I simply write reception (plus surname) then DWS it. Fortunately I only ever get Signed For (not Special Delivery’s) for them.

On a similar note the awareness of people is utterly shocking, people just can’t process that you’re walking into the building, your van is outside with hazards on and you might just might be only a few seconds. They don’t step aside or say you go first, they just stand there and look at you or if you’re both walking to the door, you with a huge parcel, they’ll still go first then stop, blocking the doorway. Likewise when people seem surprised that you’ve come back from the dead end farm track you’ve just driven up to, they can’t compute that they might need to move back off the road to let me past. It’s really odd.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Apart from the odd no all. customers rarely complain if you sign for a letter/small packet which fits though the letterbox, although you're asking for trouble signing for a parcel, as if that goes missing, or the customer claims it did, you haven't got a leg to stand on, conduct wise.

Given so many people are out during the day it's mystifying why RM still bothers with signed for for letters, as how is a customer supposed to get them when the CSP only opens for limited hours?

Royal Mail want them to get in touch (after the first attempt) and tell them what day they actually want it delivering. Personally I don’t think our redelivery system is getting through to people.

I’ve long thought we should have a blacklist, whereby anything for a customer like that is either kept at the DO for them to collect during our minimal opening hours, or in extreme cases it’s refused and simply returned to sender. I’ve heard reports of people putting in denial of receipt claims and then the next day the postman sees the purchased item in the window or the packaging in the bin. We should be so much firmer with people like that. You can add on any address with multiple dog attacks, physical violence etc.

It's after the second attempt but still an issue if they are at work all week or simply out when the postie usually calls.

Does the P739 not say ‘we’ll attempt delivery again the next day (unless you tell us otherwise)’?

So in theory someone could fill in they are unsurprisingly at work again the following day but bring it Saturday. I’ve never had to try RMs online form for sorting redelivery but it can’t be that difficult. Then again our P739s are overloaded with information, there’s too much going on.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

If they know they're going to be at work, why don't they get whatever it is delivered to their workplace instead?

I keep seeing mentions on another forum where fellow delivery staff think that it's OK for them themselves to sign for an item that requires a signature and post it through the door with no involvement from the recipient. I find the idea ridiculous. It's not our job to sign for someone else's mail.

Please tell me that I'm not the minority here and that this practice isn't common place.
Most at our place sign for it themselves just to save time as they cannot be bothered to fill card in! Dane people who come in early and don’t take breaks yet then moan about more work be given to them the idiots

Easy pickings for the COM if they ever want to reduce the number of staff in the office

So if I know that someone is going to send me something that I don't want to accept, they know it too so they send it signed for so I can't deny that I've received it yet the postie signs for it and posts it through my door. I would be absolutely furious that I've not been given the opportunity to refuse it.

How has it come to the point where the postman thinks that they are the one who can sign for it?
