I keep seeing mentions on another forum where fellow delivery staff think that it's OK for them themselves to sign for an item that requires a signature and post it through the door with no involvement from the recipient. I find the idea ridiculous. It's not our job to sign for someone else's mail.
Please tell me that I'm not the minority here and that this practice isn't common place.

It's wrong; it's against the book; it shouldn't happen. But I do it every loop; every day; week after week. Just trying to clear the volume of packets ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I await the abuse. However, I cannot change. Some in the office bring a sack full of packets back. I do not - rare I bring one thing back. There have been complaints; I really don't get any come back. I carry on. Even the angels in the office have complaints (I've seen the screens on the manager's laptops - "Really, that person got a complaint? But they are a "Goody Two-Shoes" compared to me!") so hmmm. Whatever. I do what I can to clear.
The world is in chaos so who really cares any more about an item of mail. Thank you for your concern. Move on please.

Been doing it since covid started and won't ever stop. Never had a complaint either.

Getting a signature is outdated since Covid, signed for is a waste of time should get rid of it & just have tracked.

Can't blame any postie who doesn't feel like they have the time to attempt a signed for letter Monday and Tuesday knowing the recipient isn't in on weekdays and they'll have to try again on Saturday redelivery with maybe a 50% chance of catching them, from skipping the signature when 95% of the time, the recipient will not care and out of the remainder, 50% of those won't bother to complain since they got the whatever. The minimising of CSP hours and pointless redeliveries has caused this to be worse than it ever was.
You've a choice, do it properly, get bitched at by managers for every single cut off or overtime claim and the hassle of writing out pointless extra slips, or you skip a step and maybe 1 in 50 complains if you're really unlucky.
Stupid system means the rules don't work.

Good luck with not getting a complaint and then trying to explain that you signed a piece of paper saying you won't sign for parcels etc anymore now covid is a thing of the past.

Most of us in our office are still DWS everything.
Not got a customer to sign for anything since covid and no complaints.
In fact when they ask what DWS stands for and I explain they think it's a good idea!

I've noticed that I never have to sign anything when other couriers deliver to my house..... have all other delivery companies stopped bothering with signatures?....
I think they just do photos on doorsteps instead and don't worry about signatures....
it's all a waste of time and gives a higher chance of catching covid/flu/a cold if you are passing over a PDA to 10+ customers a day.... then you go off sick.
Why is Royal Mail so far behind with all this?

Why would you do it? We have people being conduct coded currently for signing for recorded deliveries. Half the reason we are in this mess is people not doing the job as instructed.

I never do it but as others have said signatures are completely pointless. Most people just put a random squiggle with their finger which mean’s absolutely nothing.
Should all just be a photo at the door like the passports.

If it’s the right name at the right house and it will post through I will. Half the time I’ll give them a knock and if they’re out I’ll post it in. Passports don’t need a signature so I don’t see why birthday cards would. They’d have probably just sent it tracked 24 if they could get it from the post office…
