When we dropped Saturday letter deliveries during the pandemic it had nothing to do with the government.
A temporary suspension of the USO is down to Ofcom.

Some rumours going round our office about this. Some staff are convinced Mon-Fri will happen soon. I'm not convinced. For one the USO would surely have to be abolished which requires government to sign off on this. If it is going to happen it won't be anytime soon.

People on here keep saying “the government need to sign off on this” etc - but isn't the point that Royal Mail will simply ignore the USO and happily pay the fines?

We’re talking about both. They want the government to make permanent changes to the USO but the latest rumour is that they want a temporary suspension due to the perilous financial position of the company and, apparently, ofcom have the power to grant that without the involvement of government.

Think the problem lies with Royal Mail is chasing too many things at once which therefore puts wayyyy to many workload on the workforce that negatively impacts previous commitments they already had such as the USO. They keep forgetting themselves they are a letter company first before a parcel company. Yeah, letters might be down but nowhere near enough for you to just completely abandon the six days entirely. Most people are extremely lucky to even get a five day service nowadays .

All this dumbass changes such as the free collections they keep stretching the deadlines for, seasonal variations that honestly isn't going to make a lick of difference considering the extra time you may or not do in both period, and stupid revisions is where the problems lie. Had it been deemed the letters side no longer being profitable to be a five day service, Ofcom would of granted them it a long time ago. However, it's blatantly obvious that RM are continuously favouring parcels over letter and over committed themselves to the point most members have had enough. The entire company needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom, but until that happens the company is going to go to s**t.

RM stated during the strikes that letters only made up 40% of their (either) income or profit, I can’t remember which, but what company throws that away?

It will happen 100% RM and the cwu both want it , there will be plenty of takers for parcels on Saturdays and Sundays . On a personal level would love mon - fri 2 whole days of together every week .
