I dont know how people get round their delivery when it's hot wearing long trousers?

I know what you mean, I think some are afraid to get their legs out, I couldn’t care less!

One of the most frustrating aspects of the job is the old retired brigade telling us how they used to do the job in shirt and tie etc. As I always say, there’s no way they could do the job now with delivery spans as they are, wearing shirt and tie doing the outdoor hours we now do.

I’d wear a 3 piece suit, snow jacket and woolly hat if it meant we were finishing at 10am or whatever time those people used to finish!

When I started we had the grey suit, I was never issued the light grey summer version. Those grey trousers were awful when it was hot, luckily we wernt out in the heat too long. Then we got that bloody awful dark blue suit with red piping, thick heavy trousers,just horrible,your right theres no way we could wear that on today's deliveries

True, and by no means am I saying the job was easier back then but personally I am at my warmest when I knock on a door and I’m stood there for 2 mins. When I’m walking I’m not too bad. Back in the day there were few doors to knock on, just post and go. Nowadays on rounds I cover it seems to be 1 in 10 houses I’m having to knock, and then I’m stood there with no cover trying to see if I’ve taken a damn photo correctly.

True - though I generally count to 20 and determine no one is in or maybe (currently) sunning themselves in the rear garden - a lot were yesterday.

I maybe hot the whole way round but I really notice it when I'm stood still. If I can at least keep moving I can sort of ignore it and pretend I am creating my own breeze!

I can imagine especially with the machinery to get it even warmer, if it's like being in an industrial estate building type DO the airs hot and still, it's awful and that's before you get outside, wonder if they've installed Aircon in the new super-duper hubs surely it would have featured at some point in the building design.

At least it was dignified. I was never embarassed to be seen pushing a LWT, the trash new uniform however... shirts gone, boots gone. The headlamp is presumably to let us know we're following in the footsteps of the NUM.

If I remember shorts didn’t come in until the early to mid nineties. Made the Job a lot more comfortable.The biggest mistake I thought was getting rid of the Harrington jacket.I t was good to wear first thing in the morning when it was a bit chillier. Spose now doesn’t matter so much cause we’re out later.

Agree with Harrington Jackets. Best bit of kit ever. I only wear shots when it's hot as I get bad reaction to insect bites , but not one of these rock hard blokes who wear shorts in wintertime. I wonder how many will have knee joint problems in years to come. I know one bloke wore shorts all year round and had to pack in with dodgy knee.

Not sure shorts in winter cause knee problems - we would need a wider study/vote/poll here on shorts wearers equals more injuries.

For me, it's cold + wet trousers at the being of the shift and then those same trousers sticking to your legs for the rest of the day could be a lot worse - hence shorts are better. But then you do also need factor 50 cream for the lower legs during the summer.

I think bad knees are caused by a lot of other things - especially lack of flexible conditioning for legs and knees. A genius physiotherapist I once knew put me on to a foam roller. It really helps the legs (front and back), upper and lower back, and it can get rid of the muscles knots all over. For the feet try a lacrosse ball, tennis ball, or golf ball. For arms, wrist, and hand aches use your thumb and fingers to find the pain point that may be slightly away from the actual site of the initial pain. And generally forget about electronic, battery-powered, or rechargeable massage tools - you need your own body weight to apply the force to unlock your own muscles and not a buzzy thing bouncing off the surface.
