i aint sticking up for rm.....but i work at the above place....yes there is an area for repairing damaged parcels....yes there seems to be quite a lot
BUT
you wouldnt believe the amount of parcels that enter the hub badly transported or packed by original company and by that i mean shoved in yorks lightest parcel at the bottom with dozens of heavy parcels on top
they accept pallets again light parcels packed at the bottom and dead heavy parcels on top.
amazon parcels are so badly sealed 20-30% are already open and out of the parcels as though amazon just rush the packing

so again ye ive seen plenty of royal mail parcels damaged over the years but lately a lot is down to the companies packing as well

exactly this, i work in the surcharge locker and the amount of amazon parcels that have not been sealed properly is staggering, also customers seem to think a bit of brown paper and a couple of bits of sellotape and job done

The other classic they do is where the item is too big and/or heavy for the parcel they're used, often when it's the sleeve style parcels

Haha typical RM, wouldn't have it any other way, they'll probably load the mail on to a truck then drive it a couple of miles, over the nearest bridge to get to the other side of the track to load it on a train

Don't know if it's literally just the railway line in-between but if it is, they could get a tunnel bored between the two or have a overhead bridge put in

The railway isn’t in the way, it’s just that the platform is on the opposite side of the yard to the building, so Yorks will indeed need to be loaded onto trailers and shunted across a busy yard to be unloaded into the building. Can’t understand why it wasn’t designed so that the trains could run alongside the building, or into it, as is the case at PRDC, Warrington and Wishaw.

I was just sort of tongue in cheek joking about driving the mail round town to get to the other side of the track, although it wouldn't have surprised me if it was actually the case.

Drop the little Google man on the M1 North bound and you can see the layout, especially when you zoom in a little. The rail track and canopy are closest to the M1.

Once the Midlands Hub comes online and a number of the MCs around lose their 2C and Tracked 48, I'd expect that them MCs will try to grab some work from some of the MCs in the south

And that brings me nicely around to the other rumour: the machine is to be shut down for 6 months to allow for this re-engineering. Very few people I know subscribe to this...but I tend to think it may be the case...but not a major shutdown...more of an intermittent one.

But not everyone is convinced...
