I don't think they can make full timers reduce their hours to part time. They could make people redundant, they could add extra parcel delivery to routes, they will make walks longer, and don't forget you will be working Sundays.
They're taking large parcels away from walks to be done by dedicated duties. that leaves 2 viable options:

1) All non-parcel DO staff get reduced to part time
2) All walks made much longer

Over time as the technology evolves I can see RM looking into the viability of walk sorting packets, which will reduce the indoor work in DOs

As far as I'm aware this article from the TorySpunkbucket is wrong. La Poste will still continue daily deliveries. 3 day week on deliveries in the UK? If anything happens with the USO it'll be Saturdays that go.

If the USO goes on a Saturday, more jobs will go with it because there aren’t enough parcels to fill the hours.

From a legal standpoint I don't believe they can force you to reduce your contracted hours. They might get volunteers or offer a sweetener for people to change.

Assuming you mean walk sorting packets with PSM ?

How exactly would they do that ?

It would take ages !

Wouldn't really take so long. 1st sort plan would be run where you'd have a selection on each output for the busiest walks, with 1 selection for each secondary sort plan. The secondary sort plan with the next busiest walks would be run next then the one with the next busiest walks

They dropped in the words Carbon footprint and all that green bollocks so the politicians will agree eventually. Our house hasn't had a 3 day delivery service in years so won't make any difference here.
The PR team has shaken it up from just going on about 'modernisation' constantly, but it's all merely cover for the underlying issue: maximising profit by doing as little as possible. Preferrably nothing, which is what we have already where RM takes people's money for delivering a six day service and doesn't fulfill it.
The machine stops.

Well they could add more indoor work to duties because well not all work can be mechanised in spite of what Royal Mail and YOU seem to believe. Could maybe add Postbox/ Post Offices or Firms Collections onto Delivery especially with later starts as even a company run as poorly as Royal Mail must see it as sensible to have only one Postie visit a firm each day

The technology to walk sort packets already exists, it's just slow. I don't know what the processing speed is like but the tech also already exists to sequence packets as well

Sequencing packets wouldn’t be an advantage. Walk sorting would cut back on the hours of those who come in early to sort, which is usually those who are on the old full-time contracts.

What even the small Chinese packets of which there are quite a large amount which have to be sorted manually every day because quite frankly I a human being struggle to pick out the actual address let's see a path file pick it out

There ought to be a law against them.

I once saw a machine that was actually designed to sort them Chinese packets

Ok i am thick as s**t - did not understand that but i have an I.Q of a turnip on a good day

I assume packets arrive at MC pre-sorted to area/local level NOT DO level - so those hoods would have to be machine sorted 1st before they can be sorted to DO level - will they not ?

Then you can walk sort to DO i assume (but also would you not have to take out then put in hoods every time you changed DO ? ...I know depending on size of DO and number of walks you could have 2-3 DOs in one pass i guess ?)
You are looking potentially at dozens of walks at least to hundreds are you not ?
Not including dispatch times in all of this

That 's got 360 outputs so 3 sort plans for something like that would cover all the walks our MC covers. Say that machine was used in our case the busiest say 320 walks would have outputs on the first sort plan with an outpout for each "secondary" sort plan. The first of the "secondary" sort plans would have outpts for the next busiest 320 walks, with an output each of the rest of the secondary sort plans.

Something like this will get brought in at some point otherwise what's the point in having PSMs in MCs when they won't really get used to capacity of it's just 1 output per DO
