Factory work I can imagine being quite mind numbing? Especially if the hours are unsociable.
Very mind numbing, but the worst part was the complete exclusion from reality. 0600-1800 is just, lifeless. Needing days off to deal with anything al all, no chance to ever deal with childcare or anything akin to it (elderly family, sick partners) etc. I wouldn't go so far to say it was a *bad job*. because inherently it wasn't, but the shifts were really exclusionary to living a life.

Yeah I used to speak to a guy who did the early morning shift at UPS. Basically 1am - 7am. It just knocked him out of sync for ages.
If he had child care issues he either had to ask his parents or get no sleep…
This whole strike is fighting for your T&C this was never about the money was it they RM have 1.7 billion pounds to defeat us all.
We need a deal that stops or reduces this change of hours. we can only do that if someone turns up but alas he continues to runaway from the challenges that we all face today.
Never about the money wtf are you on seriously 1st ballot was for a no strings payrise ffs.
You have to cover your bases or do you just swing your bat and hope.
WHAT we are not playing baseball..we were balloted for a no strings payrise ffs wise up.

"But you’re right. I do care. I care about my job. But I’m not loyal enough to fall on to hardship and struggles. I’ll grab What money I can and if the job becomes too unbearable I’ll get another job."

What is so hard to get with this statement?

He likes his job - had been doing it for about 3 decades; he has seen and gone through many changes but he still thinks the job is fine even with proposed changes.

Also, he is just simply working for the money not some weird postman pat accolades or attributes. Just the money and it is still ain't too bad for him to lost money through strikes about money and terms.

Finally, he'll grab what he can for now. When the job becomes unbearable, he will leave.

Where did he say he can simply walk into another job with the same terms and money - in fact, his posts and this one implied the opposite.
This is PERFECTLY PUT. I am not in the union and have not been striking , i didnt vote its not my fight and i am not even that fussed about the changes as i will leave. I have been ridiculed on here because of this. I am here for pay , yes the job is good but i will leave if it becomes awful
You are here for pay yet say ''its not my fight'' when we take action on pay

I would sort of understand this position from non union members if any pay increases won by the union and its members only applied to union members rather than every employee, member or not

I assume you will refuse any extra pay increase we achieve above the 2% since it wasnt you who won it ......no didnt think so

You will take it like a leech
I am here for pay and i am happy with my current pay ? Why would i strike? I dont get a choice in the matter of pay just like how i didnt get a choice in the 9 percent offer which i would of happily taken ? but seeing as the union is inept anyway i guess i dont have to worry about that hypothetical scenario as they have been handed a huge embarrassing defeat , so glad i saved them union fees. Its my colleagues who i feel bad for being misled by this union , good people. Be interesting to see this next ballot
Would you be happy keeping your poxy 2% ( and even that wouldnt have been given without a union ) whilst the rest of us get 9%?

You would have happily taken the 9% ( not that 9% has actually been offered ) without taking any of the action that would have led to 9% being offered in the first place

Therefore

A LEECH

I thought the 2% was imposed by executive action?

If you are against executive action, surely you gave it back?

So now people are saying that without the Union, Royal Mail will have given us nothing... Up the Union, not! More change, more money!

No string pay was a Union mantra (sort of understandable because of cost of living increases and inflation) but that was just opportunistic from the Union. They know full well that the negotiations have always involved some sort of change or conditions... It took them 5 months to come to their senses.

During which, RM imposed a 2% no string pay just to satisfy the clamour and then the changes started...

As per this topic, no more strikes for another 3 weeks at least, momentum lost for good; unless they go for a new ballot and then go for a full week - that is, if a new ballot is needed B4 any new dates. In the meantime, there will be more changes with no pay increases.

Starting with resolving VRs, Closure of Callers offices and 'Later starts' starting to come in... Agencies staff will still be hanging about in most offices esp the bigger ones, new contracts and employees...

Interesting times to come...

Most of what's been offered I am actually fine with as long as....

-It's written into a concrete agreement.

-Thompson and these other amateur managers go as they cannot be trusted.

-The CWU are confident we aren't heading into a gig economy.

I get most people won't be happy with the current pay offer, but how many more times and how much more lost pay do you want to strike for to get a better deal.

It's possible we have done enough already and maybe an agreement can be reached by early January with backdated pay, so maybe it will be over. That's me being optimistic....

My actual feeling is they don't want a deal and will try to force change through, they are going to push through with it all over the next 3 months.

I just hate the unknown.

There is still a mandate in place for strike action, 14 days notice required however I believe they will pause until the next ballot takes place. A strong yes vote in the next ballot will be very important as all eyes will be on the resolve of the workforce. I think they genuinely believed they would starve members back into work after 5 or 6 of the summer strikes. It’s interesting that we have had no spin about more people returning to work this time, we know it’s not true and the leadership have massively underestimated the workforce.
This is my opinion too. The dispute was never going to be sorted with just Christmas. It might be the busiest time of year, but there's another 11mths that, from RM's perspective, are equally as important. It does seem as though they are aiming to starve us out, and let support wane, while they continue to demoralise, and beat us down with whatever they can. It really has been a stick over carrot approach by RM. The next ballot result needs to send a loud and clear message, that RM's approach has not only made us more determined, but galvanised the union more than ever. I can see the CWU holding off strikes for a short period to give members space to breath. I've always thought the path they have to navigate, has to keep the IA sustainable, and is focused on longevity. Its constant long-term disruption that this, like any other, business can not maintain.
Well said mate :cuppa always said the notion that we have to win this by Xmas is complete nonsense.
Sure, it’s heavier at Xmas,
let’s be honest it’s busy all year round.
The upcoming period is still hugely important to RM .
Other businesses want to see if they can rely on RM for the future. If we ballot again, RM will lose a tonne more business because there will be no end to how long it could this dispute be drawn out for. RM cannot run the business on uncertainty.
Stay strong people.

They don't want a deal. The changes will come in regardless.
January will be a very busy month clearing the backlog.
A lot will accept whatever is on the table at the ballot simply because attitudes are slowly changed with time.
We know their plans are catastrophic but it won't stop a proportion accepting whatever is put up.

Would another London rally make any difference?

They won’t

They aren’t even proposing that - it was never a serious proposal and was a throwaway comment in a zoom video that people picked up on

They know that any agreement that had that would never get voted in

I was happy to take the poxy 2%. I’m here to work.
If you want to lose 5% of earnings and then rejoice when you accept a 9% increase (which will actually be 4%) then good for you.
The union represents its members.
Not me.

I haven’t lost 5% of my earnings (or whatever it may be after the next round of strikes).
I got my full Christmas bonus.
I haven’t lost any annual leave allowance for next year.

My contract is with Royal Mail. If they make changes I am not happy with I will see if another job out there is more suitable. If find one, I will apply. If not I will happily stay.

I’m not here to please you and I don’t care about you enough to throw insults back at.

So you will keep striking until ST has resigned?
Out of interest what pay raise deal would you accept and which terms and conditions would you find acceptable to change for the sake of a deal?

Just curious …

I think a lot will depend on what the turnout and result is of the next ballot. If either is crap then RM might see it as the green light to try and force through more changes/stuff
