I'm going to leave it then, years ago I would of been right up for joining but after reading all your comments it doesn't seem to be the job it once was. The delivery office was about 30 minutes drive away from my house anyway. Hope everyone gets the pay sorted out by the strikes, and yous get what yous deserve.

If you need a job, at least go to the interview, you can always leave after taking some wages and finding a better role elsewhere. You might love it, you might hate it, who knows.

I've only been in the job 5 years, and the atmosphere is not great at the moment (understatement of the century), but once you're out the office, and delivering to people, the job is great.

I am sure that one of our Unions guys, Ward or Furey was asked this once and they said they aren't paid more...

As far as I understand it - an agency worker is paid the same hourly wage, but Royal Mail also have to pay that same 'wage' to the agency. - I may be completely wrong about this - but this is what I heard. So Royal Mail are paying £25+ an hour for the agency staff - half to the staff member - half to the agency?

If so - it's utter madness. And they apparently want to keep the 11,000+ agency workers long term. What's the logic here? so that they can easily dump them when they get to the point in time where they don't feel they need them anymore...

I wouldn't do our job on the new entrant terms.

This is an important point, in a fairly tight labour market, Royal Mail are going to struggle recruit and retain competent staff.

New entrant pay, is significantly less than what most "parcel courier companies" in my area are currently paying per hour. In the race to the bottom, RM claim they're paying more than the competition, I don't see it.

So good luck with that.

thats exactly what we've been told. its about £25-30 per hour to hire agency staff. £10.50 an hour goes to the agency worker, the rest goes to the agency.

And presumably that agency on the majority of cases would be the "wholly owned by RM", Angard agency? Angard, as separate division, don't seem to be losing any money as their profits are being funded at least in part by RM!

Agency guys are on the same pay as us (it includes the delivery supplement in the hourly rate). Check the rate of any agency job ad. The word from many managers is the agency gets the same amount. So RM are essentially paying double for one agency worker.

Go to the interview, get the job. If you like it stick at it, if you dont you can always look for other jobs.

I understand all the doomsday merchants on here. Its not what it used to be. RM are squeezing every last bit of blood form us.

However I still like the job. I'm old school where I will always complete duty unless I got something planned where i've told my manager a few days before that i'm not taking it all out.

£13.30 something an hour with no sick pay and you get holiday credits for each hour but far less that RM employees.

I was on this site 6/7+ years ago, joined RM 5 years ago, the same messages were being said back then which almost put me off joining after I was accepted. Turns out, while hard initially - I really liked my DO, one of the best in the entire region.

Not to say some days/ weeks can’t be completely crap, like anything I guess. I’ve also had some really good times.

As others have said it is a tough time to be joining during this dispute. Just do what the rest of us are doing: work your hours - do your job properly - try and ride out the storm and see where it takes us…

Just looked at Angard, Pertemps and GI agency sites, all offer 13.37 p/h for standard Mon - Sat OPG work.
