What will be the next move from the CWU?

Post by POSTPERSON50 »

Due an announcement from the CWU this Monday or Tuesday.

Dave and Davie suggested that they had a few ideas, but what are we expecting they will come up with?

Is there anything that the union definitely will not do?

I've always wondered how long it would take for a delivery office to become completely swamped and unmanageable if everyone worked to rule, cancelled working days off, started and finished work right on time, etc.

Probably a few weeks to a month I think (at this time of year).

I've always wondered how the hell this could ever work in a large office and who would be expected to police it?

Would the unit rep be expected to be on the door all morning, questioning why all the different start times are coming in early/ oi, Dave, let me just check the rota...thought so, you bounder, this is yer rest day...

How would anyone know if anyone is taking their breaks out in the field? Again, is the rep expected to pore over the Actuals the next day?

Finish on time? Again, who would know? Rep staying behind til 6pm to moan at docket fiends?

A picket line is a simple, visible thing...oh look, Dave's crossing the picket line, the absolute bounder....whereas the whole work to rule thing would just be a vast, unmonitorable and open to abuse mess.

In principle, yeah, working to rule would be great and you're spot on, it'd bring the company to a grinding halt, but I just can't see how it'd work in reality.
Sooner or later, a beat dog bites.

Work to rule ballot (yes, not everyone will work to time and it can’t be policed but if even just 75% do it then it will have a big effect).
Rolling strike days.

I’d like some out of the box thinking from the union too. The average holiday pay for example, it’s an absolute disgrace the union agreed to the 8 hours rule. I wonder how Simon and co would react if the union ripped that up and started helping tens of thousands to put in a claim for whatever they are owed regardless of if it’s it’s 50 minutes or 50 hours. No early mediation, no new agreements, just straight to the top. In fact how would the courts react if 80,000 of us are lining up with cases.

Or telling people not to agree to roll any days over with annual leave.

Insist on being paid for bank holidays (if another day that week can’t be given).

Refusal to drive any van with even minor defects. Things like vans with mirrors taped on, is that really safe? Doors which don’t open forcing us to unload parcels/bags etc on the road.

Simon will be expecting strikes, something which we can’t afford for eternity and he knows that. We have to try something different.

Yes, asking people to stay at home on strike days is easy, but asking every individual member to be regimental with their work time every day is a different story.

I think the work to rule on top of everything else would be a decent move.
It wouldn't need to be perfect but hopefully good enough to cause them a massive headache.
For the sake of another ballot it could be effective in between all out days/rolling strikes etc.
Also another strong ballot result wouldn't necessarily get the RM *hitting themselves it would show, that despite recent announcements the force is still strong.

Royal Mail get plenty of free work and goodwill out of the workforce that we are essentially paid as poorly as competitors. From what I've seen the average postie does 30 minutes of free work a day and probably saves Royal Mail an extra 15minutes+ a day in taking shortcuts.

I think we need a huge gathering in London and a march to RM headquarters. Whatever happens when we get there happens but I reckon it would s**t the bastards right up and show them we’re serious especially as a number of loons who join every protest would tag along.

definitely work to rule it couldn't be policed that's true and it would hit part timers the most but just have to look in mirror individually knowing it's the right thing not to do overtime until this Thompson and Co go

Union have got the chance for once to play hard ball as that’s what RM are doing rip up those shocking agreements u have signed up to like average holiday pay and hit them where it obviously hurts in the pocket get as many on board in units to do the job properly as RM want them to and see how quickly it grinds to a halt if not try something else it’s not that we haven’t got time before Xmas anything after u had just as well forget
