Re: Strikes Cancelled - Did you agree or not with the decision
Maybe 60-70% in our DO.
Personally think it was correct, and we have the moral high ground over RM.
Tracked customers weren't expecting them, every one I made sure they knew the situation.
Every one of them thought RM were a disgrace having us work.

I think the CWU also got the basic messaging wrong when giving statements to the press.
“Following the very sad news of the passing of the Queen, and out of respect for her service to the country and her family, the union has decided to call off tomorrow’s planned strike action,” said Dave Ward, the general secretary of the Communication Workers Union.
Both RMT and ASLEF were more clever.
“RMT joins the whole nation in paying its respects to Queen Elizabeth,” said Mick Lynch, the general secretary of the RMT. “The planned railway strike action on 15 and 17 September is suspended. We express our deepest condolences to her family, friends and the country.”
“In light of the sad news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death, Aslef is postponing its industrial action on 15 September,” the union said. “We express our deepest condolences to her family, friends and the country.”
It's the small details that count.
Their members are not talking about cancelled strikes, they're talking about suspended and postponed strikes.

The Union was damned if they did and damned if they didn't. Personaly I think they called it right, but can also understand the fustration.

Re: Strikes Cancelled - Did you agree or not with the decision
RM have put a lot of time and effort to plan for the hubs to run when we are on strike. I suspect calling the strikes off at the last moment, far from pleasing them would have given them quite a headache, my opinion, we should do that more often, you have to give 14 days notice to call a strike but no set time to call it off. I reckon it would be a great tactic, make them guess. Will we or won't we be on strike on a given day? We can do some and cancel some, it all causes delays and confusion. Only a f****** wants to destroy the company, no point fighting for your terms and conditions if there is no job at the end of the day.

Correct decision. Let's see what RM do when the state funeral is declared a public holiday. Another £1,000,000 down the drain Simon

I was furious last night. I've softened a bit, after being out seeing my customers.
But I still think it was the wrong call, and cancelling the pickets would have been preferable. Thompson didn't suspend services did he, the bastard's laughing at us, thinking we're soft amateurs.

100% against cancelling todays strike..alas decision made so....
If the state funeral is on a weekday then the ball is in RM court - let's see what they do....pressure will be on them

There's no pressure on them.
It will be Monday 19th September.
It is actually by luck or good fortune already a bank holiday in some areas.
It will be a non service day for us, not a bank holiday unless the government is pressured into making it one for everyone.
Those scheduled to work will get the day off.
Those not scheduled to work will lose out.

Yes a monumental occurrence but our lives matter too. Our position has been significantly weakened as a consequence. We still face spiralling costs of living. Now is not the time for good will when our livlihoods and way of life are at stake. A non picket would have sufficed as most people would have taken the day given the late announcement. Royal mail never show any good will and will profiteer once again after a global event out of their control, while we once again get nothing. Our lives are worth something too. Don't forget it. We will now suffer because of the death of a very privileged woman. A certain irony in that.

we can't really postpone the strike, the next strikes are booked in anyway on 30th and 1st, they would come before any postponed strike.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑09 Sep 2022, 16:24I think the CWU also got the basic messaging wrong when giving statements to the press.

Re: Strikes Cancelled - Did you agree or not with the decision
I think there’s a few things to note here.
1.) It was patiently the right decision by the CWU to call of the strike today - the organisation couldn’t be seen not to be doing that.
2.) What it did do however, was organise a situation where employees could effectively strike on their own accord if they wanted to without any repercussions.
i.e. it was effectively a chance to strike without pickets
3.) Those loudly voicing their displeasure at the decision on social media may wish to consider whether their own actions are harming the overall cause.
A united union is a formidable force - indeed as many have commented moment was growing.
One that visibly show’s fractures and divisions looks weak.
You may wish to vent - but if ST is seeing your tweets slagging of the CWU he’s rubbing his hands (and maybe even something else).

Yes I know your right but compassion, which we as a union always show, is spat back in our faces by the very wealthy people who govern our corporation.

Re: Strikes Cancelled - Did you agree or not with the decision
I didn't go in to work this evening, and nobody from RM has attempted to contact me to ask where I am. I conclude that they are not too bothered that I did not turn up for my shift, but to be honest, I think the same indifference to my presence applies to any shift, any day of the week. I am infinitely replaceable, or infinitely disposable, in their eyes. I don't see any point in putting myself out for a company that has no respect for me and what I do, or for a job I no longer care about. I have no idea how many will have turned up for the shift, but I would be surprised if I face any questions when I do return to work.

That's a very dangerous position for a union to promote.3.) Those loudly voicing their displeasure at the decision on social media may wish to consider whether their own actions are harming the overall cause.
It's almost North Korean in its mindset.
Better to examine why that displeasure exists than trying to silence it.
