Strike Cancelled 9/9

Covid, illegal loop-holes, and now the Queen's passing...Has RM hired divine intervention from a dark place to try and kybosh our industrial action? Anyway don't let them win...in a few weeks and approaching our next strike date 30th Sept, this will all be a distant memory. We'll hit them harder with more determination. Today will be a very unproductive day for RM anyway with lots not going in..it will feel like a semi-strike.

So far locally not heard a thing from the CWU or the local resource unit. Anyone who's avoiding the news and isn't on social media won't know the strikes have been called off. Some offices will probably find that most of their staff aren't in where the staff haven't been informed about the strikes being called off

To be honest even if you were watching the news you still wouldn’t know the strikes were off because all the news was about the Queen and nothing else.

People expecting a day off for the Funeral need to google Operation London Bridge. There has been a plan for decades for this day. There is one for Charles, there was one for Prince Phillip. There is probably one for William and whoever takes over from him.

Will there be a bank holiday for the funeral?
The Queen and the Prime Minister have previously agreed that the day of her funeral will be “a day of national mourning”.

This means the day won’t technically be called a bank holiday, but similar expectations may be upheld.

When this falls obviously depends on what day the funeral takes place, as the Royal Family is yet to confirm an exact date.

According to Operation London Bridge, if the funeral falls on a weekend or another bank holiday, an additional day off will not be granted.

If it falls on a weekday then something akin to a more traditional bank holiday will come into effect.

However, it will be at the discrection of employers to decide if workers get a day off.

I’d say about 60% made it in today. Wasn’t going to come in myself, but decided to brave it. Wanted to cancel my CWU membership first thing but the rep decided to stay home.

If we go down the route not supporting the CWU then we’ve already lost and Si and his minions will have won and we’ll all be shafted. We might not all agree with what they’ve done but we still MUST all stick together they want to create a divide and this hasn’t helped at all.

To those who think it was right to cancel the strike, for the sake of optics. All I can say is even before this, the news only carried brief mention of the strike. The media was hardly covering it anyway. From now till the funeral and probably beyond there will be nothing but coverage of the Queen`s passing and related comment, they simply will not cover our story at all strike or no strike. There would not be any significant bad publicity because the press are obsessed with Royalty.
I now fear we have already lost this dispute. Here is what I fear will happen. No strike will happen this dispute, the union will seek a watered down deal and get it, claiming victory. Probably getting 6% or possibly 5% this year and 3.5% (possibly a little more) next year with changes to our contracts that will include reduction of sick pay, 40 hours for new starters, halting any moves to 35 hour week, some form of hours banking, but not exactly as was wanted by RM . Despite this rubbish deal, the company will go back on any promises in less than 18months and start talking about it is now no longer affordable without further changes. They will again threaten executive action and we will vote for another strike. by then inflation could be over 20% and we would have accepted a below inflation pay increase. The Tory government meanwhile will likely introduce new laws to stop strikes, making all but impossible to take any IA.
In short we will be in a worse situation than we are now. The momentum of the whole Union movement in these disputes is undermined by not taking action as planned, leading to failure. This is pretty much what happened when we called off strikes due to covid. That led directly to this dispute, because the Union did not want to look bad in the eyes of the public, but it actually got us nowhere.

The support we have from the public would be lost if we continue to strike tomorrow.

I think you need to start worrying about the support you've just lost from the membership.

Tomorrow will be a s**t show with two days mail because mailcentres network and distribution will now be working tonight.

Members won't forget, the PEC has just undermined the entire dispute.
All you had to do was stand down the picket lines, the public would not have even given a thought to whether they got their mail tomorrow.

Being closer to Christmas it will have more of an impact, the dispute is merely postponed to be resurrected.

I don't get the logic in striking on a Saturday as it means we lose a full days pay, on what is usually a light day, and most of our customers won't even realise we're on strike, particularly if the manager's etc are delivering their Tracked parcels. The only reason seems to be that's the day of the national day of protest but that now looks like another non starter anyway after the Government capped energy bills.
