From the perspective of an outsider/customer

Post by Meredith2k5 »

Just wanted to join up really to enquire into what's really going and and to show my support as much as possible. It may be interesting to hear ab outsider's perspective too.

I wanted to work with RM at one point a few years back, however with the recent pandemic, town centres becoming ghost towns causing a surge in online sales and an increase in online sales I literally can't imagine how hard things have become now and I honestly don't think I could handle it for what I assume to be unfair pay.

So many companies have started to increase their pay, especially those on minimum wage to compete as the job sector since covid has been turned upside down with not enough workers to fill positions. Executives and managerial staff everywhere seen to be getting bonuses and I imagine RM must have at least turned a profit larger than usual during the pandemic. With the cost of living and inflation as well, I honestly think you guys deserve a pay rise more than most other sectors and are heavily in support. I hope RM realise that their public image is at stake as refusing a proper wage increase and demanding more work is going to look extremely bad on them.

What is truly going on with RMs loss/profit? They claim they are losing 1M a day I've seen stated somewhere but have also allegedly received record profits and are giving back to their investors and higher ups. If they truely are at a loss, why? I can't imagine creating a situation where staff are unhappy and customers having a bad image of them will help and cause further problems.

In terms of having to reform and evolve to compete with companies like Amazon or risk dyeing off, they are thinking purely about the online shopping sector. The fact that I can send a letter from the south of England to the north of Scotland and have it arrive the next working day is still quite amazing to me and nobody else can really match it for the price. I don't mind RM as they currently are and would quite honestly be happy with the same current service for the foreseeable future.

I wish there were a better way to show my support but I don't think there is much I can do. Just know that many people are in the same boat in that we are thankful for what you do and realise that postal workers truely are the backbone of RM. Thank you for continuing such services through the pandemic and let's hope you get the salary you all rightly deserve from this!

Just watch Novara Media's video about the situation on youtube. They sum it up quite well.

I'll also add that customers should know that a huge amount of posties go back to work after their day off to have to deliver 2 days worth of mail for no extra pay. Meanwhile the customers are being ripped off as the service they paid for doesn't exist. Royal Mail are seemingly understaffing us to save money.

The public can help on social media by spreading the word about what is actually going on and where Royal Mail may be heading. It seems Royal Mail may not deliver letters in the near future as they may abandon them. In this case it may be smart to call for nationalisation as a national letter service is imperative to the country, it's not something we can afford to lose.

If she was born in 2005, she could be a journalism student at uni?

Yeah, there's Meredith taking the time out to write some nice supportive comments, and the first reply is a snarky comment. Couldn't even spell the name right. :d'oh!

Thanks for the support. :thumbup

As usual it's about more than the Torymail headlines. The people that work for Royal Mail actually care about the long term success of Royal Mail .... unlike the people that try to run it, who are ONLY interested in short term profits & bonuses before moving onto another Company. :no no

We're in it for the long term. As I like to say GREAT Job SHITE Company! :cuppa

Fair enough, it's possible. But I don't see what extra information they think they would get over and above what can be gotten from the rest of the site. It just seemed a little cynical, and it doesn't give a good impression to someone who could genuinely be showing support. No need to take offence Gary.

Sorry I totally forgot about this thread but have been keeping an eye on proceedings. A little late in my reply.
Quite honestly I am exactly as stated, just a regular guy wanting to show support! I've had an interest in working for royal mail in the past hence I knew about this forum but I'm not sure how I feel on that now if the company are going to be making redundancies... It wouldn't feel right as essentially that's what RM seen to want, to replace their workforce for cheaper and with more responsibility.
The strikes are important to me as it seems absolute criminal to me what the higher ups and executives are getting away with. For us none postal workers this marks a big moment for all sectors. These strikes (or they seem to be to me) seem to be standing up to an unfair deal with no obvious end in sight. Many sectors are fed up with working conditions and you guys are almost setting the stones for what can be achieved. Even if you don't get a fair deal your resolve is inspiring and I even think this will lead to a change in governing party in the next elections.
I could go on, in a way I don't know why I follow this so closely but I have a few postie friends that have worked for RM for nearly a decade and they are both people I respect highly.
The media and RM seem to spin a story that postie's are holding Christmas to ransom but I highly doubt you guys want to be out of pocket by a considerable amount, standing outside in freezing weather and having to return to insane amounts of work so I started looking deeper.
I don't expect a reply or a hot take as was put earlier, I am trying to stay respectful though still as I know it's not really my business, but know some of us are truely on your side!
