A Royal Mail van has crashed after leaving the road and colliding with a roadside railing. The incident occurred on Offham Road, Lewes, at around 8.50am this morning (August 24), the driver was treated for injuries.

The van has been pictured on the pavement having left the road and crashing into the railing near the Elephant and Castle Pub. Sussex Police closed the road following the collision to allow recovery work to take place.

South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) was called to the scene to tend to the driver. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) was also called to make the road safe.

The apparent owner of the house adjoining the road took to Twitter to speak of the incident. He said: "So this just happened. Royal Mail van crashed into our house sending railing through kitchen window. @SECAmbulance here in seconds and driver seems okay.

The owner was keen to praise the work of emergency responders. Kevin Crowley added: "Great work by @sussex_police and @EastSussexFRS to clear the scene."

Sussex Police has now said: "Emergency services responded to reports of a van colliding with a wall on St John’s Terrace, near Offham Road in Lewes, about 8.50am on Wednesday (August 24). The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries, and checks were made to ensure the area was safe."

A SECAmb spokesperson said: "I can confirm ambulance crews attended the scene following reports a vehicle had left the road at approximately 8.50am today. One person was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for further checks."

The collision caused the road to be closed for some time. Traffic site INRIX has now said: "Traffic easing, earlier accident on A2029 Offham Road in both directions between Abinger Place and The Avenue. After a van hit a wall, outside the Elephant And Castle pub."
