Royal Mail postie praised for delivering letter to vague address 'dept of creepy crawlies'

A university professor was taken aback when he received a handwritten letter vaguely addressed to him after he appeared as a guest on Radio Four programme 'The Life Scientific'. The envelope had been addressed to the 'department of Creepy Crawleys (sic) University of Gloucester, somewhere in Gloucester or Cheltenham, website doesn’t think an address is needed'.

Professor Adam Hart from the University of Gloucestershire was delighted but surprised how the Royal Mail sorting office still managed to get the letter to him. He loved the fact the letter was hand written and the folks at Royal Mail took the time to find him.

Science Communication Professor Hart said: “I was on Radio 4 taking part in The Life Scientific programme and a listener had hand written a letter to me about his observation of wasps. I am a entomologists are and study social insects like ants, bees and wasps.

“It is always nice to get a handwritten letter but when I saw the address on the envelope I would never have imagined it would get to me. I just thought it was brilliant the sorting office got it to me.

“It reminded me of a friend who had a letter delivered and the address was, ‘Somewhere up a hill in Dartmoor by Dave’s house. The postman got the letter there based on that description.

“Royal Mail get criticised a lot but they work really hard and do a very good job, clearly.”

Royal Mail have said they are pleased the letter reached the professor despite the address being a little vague.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We are very pleased that this letter reached Professor Adam Hart. As the letter was addressed to ‘University of Gloucester’, it correctly reached Professor Hart at the University of Gloucestershire, despite the fact that the university does not in reality boast a ‘department of creepy crawlies’.

“Although it is important for letters to be properly addressed, it is always pleasing to see examples like this of postmen and women having used their initiative to get an item of mail to the right address. We hope that the Department of Creepy Crawlies enjoyed reading the letter once it had had arrived.”
