Royal Mail unveils new Northern Ireland parcel sorting machine

Royal Mail has put its first automated parcel sorting machine in Northern Ireland into operation. The machine is capable of handling 157,000 parcels a day and will help meet the surge in demand for parcels that are for next-day delivery.

It was officially opened by the then-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on Wednesday. The machine is an intelligent system of conveyor belts and scanning technology that sorts parcels for despatch,

The machine is in the Northern Ireland Mail Centre in Newtownabbey, and can sort up to 7,500 parcels per hour for sending on to local delivery offices across the Royal Mail network and can process a range of parcel shapes and sizes that weigh up to 20kg.

The postal operator says that domestic parcel volumes are up more than 30% compared to before the pandemic, and the new parcel sorting machines in the Royal Mail network are helping it transform into a parcels-led business.
