2 more acquitted in Post Office Horizon legal cases

Two more UK sub-postmasters had their convictions overturned last week over the Post Office Horizon accounting scandal.

Southwark Crown Court formally acquitted two people referred to it by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) in uncontested appeals on the 9th June. The cases were originally brought in 2003 and 2005 and relate to convictions in magistrates courts in which the Post Office acted as the prosecution.

A Post Office spokesman said: “We are sincerely sorry for the impact of historical failures on the lives of the people affected.

“We continue to take extensive action to fully address the past and to ensure past shortcomings can never be repeated. We have undertaken fundamental reforms to rebuild trust and forge a new relationship with our current postmasters.”

When the issues came to light, the Post Office ceased prosecutions related to the system in 2015. Appeals against the cases began in 2020 following the Horizon Issues judgement on a group civil litigation case. To date there have now been 74 historical convictions overturned on unopposed appeals. This is slightly over 10% of the 736 sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses convicted based on information from the faulty accounting software used by the Post Office between 2000 and 2014. Many more are likely to be overturned in the coming months.
