What the hell is kicking a dog got to do with "a PC society"?

Whether it was justified or not (I'm not judging) anybody is going to be pissed off if you kick their dog, they will complain and usually run to the local press if they're not happy with the response from RM.

It's not a new thing, these kind of complaints have been happening for the 30+ years I've been in the job and probably long before that. It's got nothing to do with changes in society, people love their dogs and don't believe they can do anything wrong, that's always been the case.

The PC angle is to highlight the plight of the dog and its owners and not to highlight the fact that a dog savaging a postie is a lot worse than a dog getting kicked away when attacking a postie. The postie kicking a dog gets more views than a dog biting a postie. It's more newsworthy these days.

Looking at the comments in the Manchester Evening News post, they appear to be almost unanimously on the side of the postie punting the dog. All is not lost.

Train the teenager not to open the door with a loose dog.
I understand its a traumatic experience for both of them but the postman is the victim here.

I was nipped twice within seconds. At first i thought it was the dogs claw that scratched me but after the second nibble i saw it was a bite. It was a small dog like the one in the video. Unfortunately I didnt follow my urge to boot the fecker over the hedge. I didnt complain to the owner but everytime Ive had a parcel for her I can hear her making sure the dog is away.

100% the owners fault and I’d have done the same. If people are this stupid they don’t deserve or shouldn’t be allowed to own animals.

Pisses me right off too that we’re immediately painted as the bad guys by the press here. Been a different situation if say a neighbour had come round with their young kid asking for their ball back, the dog runs out and mauls the kid, parent then kicks the dog down the drive. Imagine the headlines then.

I'm on the postie's side. Bite first, ask questions later? Or defend yourself before becoming a victim.

Chap is just doing his job, appears well dressed, then dog from nowhere yapping at straight to his legs, he did the right thing. It's the owner at fault! What if this was a child who was lost or run off into someone's garden and the dog ran up to the child? Dog should be under control.

He' doesn't even kick it, the dog goes for him and he flicks his foot at it, well within his rights to do that.

They would have been even more peeved if the dog had bitten the postie and he then reported it to the Police and insisted it was put down.

From what we can see and hear in the brief video clip, the dog appeared to be having a go at the postie. It was off the lead, uncontrolled, and had no fear. It was clearly used to doing this with no consequences.

After kicking it away the dog actually appeared to learn a lesson from it.

Until it hears the doorbell again and no doubt it will do exactly the same again, one thing you soon learn as a postie is that dogs are not the most intelligent of animals. If they were then they'd soon realise the bits of paper etc dropping though the door each day are no threat to them.

The girl's mother said apart from distressing her daughter the incident had left the dog wetting itself every time the doorbell rings. She said: "My dog is terrified of going to the door and when the doorbell goes, he wets himself and is visibly shaking."
