Photographic Proof of Delivery.

Post by Dorset Plodder »

How's everyone finding this?

The most absurb thing for me is the fact that they insist that you have a photo of the packet ... WITH AN OPEN DOOR. So for example: If you pull up outside someone's house and they're washing their car, or gardening, do you have to say to them, "Sorry I can't just hand over this packet you'll have to go back up to your house and open the front door so I can take a photo" :hmmmm

On Rurals it's even worse. Say you bump into a Resident buying his paper in the village store, in theory you can't hand over his packet. But it's Tracked (so you just can't just throw it back into the van either ... it's got to be scanned or the DOM has a hissy fit) so again, in theory, you're expected to drive possibly 10 minutes out into the sticks to scan the packet outside his empty cottage and leave him a 739.

As experienced posties you'd like to think they'd let you use your common sense but it's being gradually replaced by inflexible procedures. :cuppa

Half the stuff I deliver is handed to customers like you describe. I just take a picture of the parcel itself, or failing that any old blurry crap. As long as I know the customer has the parcel I don't worry.

Also not fussed if the door is half open or not, as long as I know they're in.

Also don't bother with the "hanging halfway out the letterbox" bullshit. It's so bloody awkward when you've got a bundle of mail to hold, a PDA you're trying to aim, a letterbox you're trying to operate. I've only got one bloody pair of hands. I just take a photo of some stuff with the letterbox vaguely in shot.

If you know your customer, you know your customer..... do what the customer wants. [until they complain about you doing what they've asked of you, then stop. Forever]

I'd be utterly pissed off as a customer if this was followed how it (used to) say on the photo screen. Now they've opened it up a bit so you can safe place it anyway.

Our customer is the sender though

They pay us to get proof of delivery so the recipient doesnt say they didnt get it or we lost it

I've been taking photos of their hand holding the parcel as I hand it over. No one's face is in the picture and the gps confirms the location. Seems a "common sense" thing to do, so no doubt I'll be told I'm doing wrong as common sense isn't tolerated much at RM.

I often hear this, and it's technically correct of course.

But for me, my customer is the one who has ordered and paid for the item, and paid us for delivery of the item. i.e. the recipient.

The person we deliver to doesnt pay Royal Mail at all at any point. They order the item and pay the business to get the item to them. The business chooses who to use to get it to them and pays that courier to do so.

Similarly, if I want to send my Gran a card, I am the one who pays for the stamp as payment for Royal Mail getting the item to her

She doesnt do a thing. I am Royal Mail's customer.

I don't bother with the postbox thing as I know at some point a customer on the other side of the door will pull the parcel through the letterbox as I am trying to take a photo.

I never understand those people who grab the post as you put it through their letterbox. Are they that desperate for their post.

Most parcels these days come direct from a retailer so delivery cost is included, one way or another, in the price the recipient pays for the item.

Doesnt matter. Its still the retailer who pays Royal Mail.

Just like there is no such thing as free delivery. Free for the recipient simply means the retailer isnt passing on the cost the retailer is spending on getting the item to you. The item is not being delivered for free. The retailer is still paying someone to do it ( if not themselves )

Basic contract law.

Person buying the item pays the sender and has a contract with them

Sender pays RM and has a contract with them.

I know it's not correct but feet or hands in the picture at farm gates with dogs foaming at the mouth are good for my rural.
If management don't like it they can deliver the f**kin thing and have a five minute conversation with the farmer
as to why they have to get their dog behind a door in the house and then can then walk back 30 yards to open the gate
and walk back to the door again so I can take a photo of the parcel with the door open.

Customer: I didn't receive my tracked parcel today.

Postman: Yes you did, i have a photo for proof.

Manager: The front door is closed and you've taken a picture of a parcel against a closed door.

Customer: It must have been stolen then.

Manager: Postman you are to blame.

Manager: Postman you are suspended pending investigation.

A possible scenario that could happen.

Exactly why mine all go back to the local delivery collection point (post office) if the door aint open or the safeplace aint safe ( i ignore any 'put in bin/by front door/garage' prompts on the pda)
