Pregnancy

Post by piper88 »

Hi,
I’m currently 24 weeks pregnant and despite going through the risk assessments with the current manager I am still being asked to carry out the same duties as usual. This hasn’t been easy but i have managed. It is now coming to a stage where I am really slowing down and becoming unable to complete my rounds. Voicing my concerns with my manager has been met with an attitude of disinterest and no understanding. Has anyone got any experience of delivering while pregnant or what would be reasonable adjustments I could ask for at this stage? It is becoming quite stressful.
Thank you

Welcome to RMC and congratulations. :thumbup

By my reckoning 24 weeks is 6 months? I'm quite shocked that you're being treated this way, but nothing surprises me with this business. :no no I'm sure someone with greater knowledge than me may be able to help further, it's a bit early for a lot of posters. :cuppa

If you go to the Home Page there is a section for "Royal Mail Employment Agreements" under there is a section for "Parenting". I believe there may be some information regarding pregancy on there although I haven't read through it all.

As for dealing with next week: I presume you have no Unit CWU Rep? You mention talking to Area Reps, so that's the way to go. :thumbup

The fact you have a van is ridiculous, I would have thought climbing in, and out, of a van would be more hareful than just walking. We have several OPGs on "Walking Only" duties because of the effect of just such a thing.

Worst case scenario: You could visit your Doctor and see what they say. They might feel they need to sign you off. I believe RM expect you to work up to the last 4 weeks of pregnancy.

Good Luck :cuppa

I would suggest discussing your concerns with union area health and safety representative at earliest opportunity.

Employer has obligations to yourself and unborn child, this is why risk assessments are used and adhered to. Risks maybe caused by lifting / carrying heavy loads, standing / sitting for long periods, exposure to substances or long working hours. Employer must then remove the risk or in some cases remove the employee from any risk.

Good luck :thumbup

Thank you for your advice and thoughts. Yes I’m going to speak to him on Monday morning. We have a rep and she has tried to help but finding it frustrating being ignored also. I had a bad day yesterday and kept having to take breaks, it was very busy and I ended up not completing and being locked out of the office when I got back. Found it quite depressing. I think It’s come to a point where I’m going to have to make a stand. I wanted to work as close to my due date as possible but it’s becoming apparent I may not be able to.
