Welcome OURKID. Ooooo I remember my first day on me own - I survived, best advice is do not get disheartened when it takes you longer the first few weeks eventually you learn the quickest way to do the duty. Pace yourself.

Workplace coach - whats one of them??

Had two people show me what to do and both showed me different ways!! Not impressed with training so far.
Not impressed full stop as what info given at interview and induction nothing like what happens in real life!!

Can't believe you are expected to do round as quick as experienced postie after only 3 days!!

Is this the norm?

Yes it is, my first day on my own and the management came out to me on the round and asked if i was actually going to get finished by 12 as they were in a rush to get home, that was back in 2000 when we actually had a chance of getting finished by 12.

I now understand why RM are having such a turn over of staff in my local office.

Managers say delivery should take 4 hours max and nobody I know who's done the route has
ever completed it in that time!! Gonna ask manager tom to show me how it's done!!

Not finished first week and already feeling p'd off!!

Workplace coach is as it says a coach whose job it is to train you to the best of there abilities and show you all the ins and outs of the job,how to prep a walk,how to do redirections,how to kill off dead letters how to load your bag or trolley and all the other bits and bobs.You should get 3 days training on the walk you will be doing and no you will not be expected to do it as quick as us,so dont panic tell the dom whats happened so far and ask if he has the little training booklet that is available for new entrants,it is spot on.Everyones different,some people pick it up very quickley and can soon be on different walks after a few weeks,the norm is 12 weeks on the same walk then on to reserve duties covering Leave and sick leave.

Seems I must be imagining what manager said today - I asked if I would get any o/t if I don't finish round on time (even posties been on round for years don't finish it on time)and he said only the one hour I get to make me upto a 30 hour contract and no more . Already worked 27 hours this week and two more shifts to go!!

Not exactly encouraging is it!! As for the walk log - doesn't exist in process of being updated!!

I just can't believe this is the norm for RM.

OURKID,welcome,i suggest you seek out the union rep at your place.
He/she should be able to give you some pointers.
And of course,you can ask what ever you want on the site.

If he wont pay you overtime then my advice is to advise him you won't work it, but if you do decide to go down this route make sure you join the Union and that you take the Rep with you, or at least get a witness. This should not be normal but everyone who has started the job in the last few years, has a story of a manager trying it on.
