TikTok goes viral over Bromley Royal Mail AirPods blunder

A woman from Bromley left her AirPods in an Uber, the driver found them and posted them back via Royal Mail – but she says they never arrived.

Katie Harris’ kind Uber driver posted her forgotten AirPods back to her Bromley home on February 4 - using Royal Mail’s special delivery service which guarantees arrival before 1pm the next day.

The following day, February 5, the item said it had been delivered at 9.38am on the tracking site – despite Katie not having been home to provide the required signature on receipt.

When Katie did arrive home, her package was nowhere to be seen - but a signature reading “XPI”, and beneath it “Signed for by: KATIE” showed up on the Royal Mail “proof of delivery” site.

Katie is adamant that this is not her signature, and so proceeded to knock on her neighbour’s doors to see if any of them had the parcel.

She says none of them had it, and that she was told by the postman the next day that he put it through her letterbox.

Despite this, Katie says she couldn't find the headphones, and claimed with Royal Mail who refused compensation – despite the service offering an insurance up to a value of £500.

Katie told the News Shopper: “The Uber driver used a premium Royal Mail service.

“There was no package when I got home and none of my neighbours had it either.

“When I spoke to the postman the next day, he said he remembers posting it through the door, but we don’t have it so I don’t know what’s happened there.

“I put a claim in through Royal Mail for reimbursement of a lost package cost, but because its GPS system shows the postman on my road at the time it said they were posted, I can’t claim.

"I was told the previous decision can't be overturned.

“It’s my word against theirs, I don’t have my parcel and I’m stuck in the middle.”

Katie has since made a TikTok video to share her experience - and has had nearly 10,000 views on the vodeo.

She says she has gone to the local post office numerous times to see if they have her package - but has had no luck.

Katie escalated the issue with Royal Mail after her claim was declined and says she was told that there was “nothing" they could do.

Royal Mail has apologised if Katie didn’t “receive the high levels of service expected”.

It added that “thankfully the vast majority of items are securely delivered to customers”.

Katie explained: “Royal Mail said they’d spoken to the postman and it said delivered as addressed so there’s nothing they can do.

“ I escalated it to a panel which is the highest escalation point.

“I imagine again they’ll use the GPS to go off, but I still don’t have the package.

“Also, the postman clearly signed for it – he didn’t actually get my signature and posted it through the letterbox.

“With the service it was sent through, the parcel should have been handed to someone.”

Royal Mail hopes it can reach a "mutually satisfactory resolution" as the complaint is being looked at by its Postal Review Panel.

The AirPods inside the package are worth £250 according to Katie – to which she says you “wouldn’t just put £250 in cash through a letterbox”.

“Clearly a mistake was made by not giving me the parcel and not getting a signature,” she continued.

“I don’t know who has it and I can’t get my money back.

“It’s clearly not very special delivery after all.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Every item we handle is important to us and we always strive to provide the best possible service to all of our customers.

“Our postmen and women work extremely hard to deliver to mail to customers across the country, 6 days a week, in all weathers.

“Thankfully the vast majority of items are securely delivered to customers.

“We apologise to this customer if they did not receive the high levels of service expected from Royal Mail.

“The customer’s complaint is now being looked at by the Postal Review Panel where we hope to be able to reach a mutually satisfactory resolution.”

How can the RM turn down her claim as surely the postie has failed to get a signature and actually hand over the letter/airpods to the customer? Either the posties put them though the wrong door or swiped them himself, as it's seems unlikely the customer would make this much fuss if they'd been correctly delivered.

if we're now standing by the GPS records as being proof of delivery then why are we now to go down the Photo capture route?

Sounds like RM are backing the postie, which is good to hear, she’s trying it on.

Too right, reckon she's got them, just trying it on thinking she'll get some cash as she thinks she had to sign for them and knows she didn't, the postie who for some reason thought he was either doing her a favour or saving himself valuable seconds by not writing out a p739 would normally be right up s**t creek.

Royal Mail compensates Bromley customer over AirPods delivery blunder

https://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/2000 ... y-blunder/

Royal Mail has apologised and compensated one of its Bromley customers after weeks of disputing a blunder over the delivery of some AirPods.

As reported in the News Shopper, Katie Harris left her AirPods in an Uber at the beginning of February.

The driver posted them back using Royal Mail’s special delivery service which guarantees arrival before 1pm the next day.

Despite the tracking site saying the item had been delivered with a signature on February 5, Katie says she was not at her Bromley home to sign for the package and could not find it when she returned.

Katie began a dispute with Royal Mail who initially refused compensation for the “missing parcel” - despite the service offering insurance up to a value of £500.

Katie appealed the refusal of compensation and had been waiting for weeks while a Postal Review Panel looked at her case.

She said she was “seriously disappointed” by the way it was being dealt with, addind that she did not have any “trust in Royal Mail at all” – despite having previously regarded it as a more premium service.

Now, after sending a mere £6.85 in compensation on March 2, Royal Mail has “eventually” agreed to pay for Katie’s replacement AirPods as well as offering compensation for her troubles.

It comes as the Postal Review Panel have concluded the case and instructed the company to offer reimbursement.

Katie told the News Shopper: “Royal Mail emailed me and they will be reimbursing me.

“They said they recognise that the parcel should have been hand delivered and it was the post person’s failing and as such will refund the cost of the AirPods I had bought as a replacement.

“This was £109, and they also added £50 for compensation of dealing with the issue.

“Every penny counts these days and Royal Mail do deserve praise now considering they did eventually come through with it.”

A spokesperson for Royal Mail apologised to Katie in the email and assured her that the company is not “complacent about the quality of service”.

They also acknowledged that the person posting the parcel should have “waited for someone to accept it before marking it as delivered”.

They said that the item should have been returned to the Delivery Office to await collection or further instruction.

Before being compensated, Katie threatened to make “as much noise about this as possible” – having considered reaching out to Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, for help.

She had also made a TikTok video about her experience with Royal Mail which received more than 10,000 views and 500 comments.

A signature reading “XPI”, and beneath it “Signed for by: KATIE” showed up on the Royal Mail “proof of delivery” site – but Katie had claimed this signature was not hers.

The AirPods inside the package were worth £250, according to Katie.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We are sorry that this customer had cause to complain to Royal Mail, and are pleased to have now resolved matters to her satisfaction.

“Every item we handle is important to us and we always strive to provide the best possible service to all of our customers.

“Our postmen and women work extremely hard to deliver to mail to customers across the country, six days a week, in all weathers.

“Thankfully the vast majority of items are securely delivered to customers.”

Several points sprung out at me: "AirPod" ... "Uber" .... "Tik Tok video with 10000 views" ...... "XPI that's not my signature" ...... "Make as much noise as possible" I got the impression of some millennial trying it on for some compo. Surprised she never put it on Arse Book & Twatter! :speak to the hand

The Postie says they posted it I believe them. Katie Spouting Off about "the parcel should have been handed to someone when using this service" was she aware that we were given special (No pun intended) dispensation during Covid to use the XPI code instead of a signature. We were also told, rightly or wrongly, that if a Special would go through a letterbox (as this one could) then we should post it.

Have Royal Mail since riscinded this policy? If not do they realise that a Special doesn't require photo proof of delivery, whereas a Covid test kit does? :hmmmm It's because of people like this that everyone's demanding photo capture. I hope she gets docketed for every single parcel from now on.

Rany Over! One last thing Katie: Remember it was YOU that left the Bloody AirPods in the Uber in the first place. We all lose stuff it's called life. :cuppa

I find it hard to believe that an Uber driver would go to the hassle of posting them back Special Delivery if he could just pop them through the letterbox next time he was in the area or she could have paid the fare for him to drop them off. This whole thing seems like attention seeking and a scam.

Every day's a school day. We were getting so much conflicting info thrown at us, with very little clear Leadership, it wouldn't surprise me if we were doing it wrong all along. Plus of course it suited Management at the time to get as much delivered as possible. :cuppa

XP1-ing a Special Delivery and posting it through a letterbox.....it never fails to amaze just how some posties put their job on the line by cutting corners.

You think you're going a good deed, but as this incident clearly shows, the customer will NOT be your friend if it goes wrong (that's presuming it has of course). Back in the good old days you'd get away with these tricks, but in 2022....absolute NO NO.

We were always taught with SD's - you knock the door as addressed, customer is in and signs for it - OK. Customer not in...P739 and back to DO. No neighbour, no safeplace, no delivery to alternative address.

A lot of the usual rules that you probably used when you were working went out the window with Covid. Like everyone else RM were running around like headless chickens.

We were getting a constant stream of ever confusing, and often conflicting, information , and instructions, depending on the latest data from The Government ... The Doctors .... RM .... and the CWU! Strange Times.:cuppa
