A Royal Mail postman in Scotland won £17,000 in compensation for his firing
He was sacked after lying about leaving chewing gum on a customer's gate
A disgruntled customer sent CCTV of the veteran postman to his bosses
A postman who was sacked for sticking his chewing gum on a customer’s gate lantern, has won £17,000 compensation.
The 59-year-old postie - called G Harvey - had worked for Royal Mail for more than 25 years and he delivered mail on rural rounds from the Prestonpans office in Scotland.
The customer complained to his bosses about what was captured on CCTV.
The 59-year-old postie - called G Harvey - had worked for Royal Mail for more than 25 years
The CCTV was emailed to Royal Mail bosses describing how Mr Harvey had removed the chewing gum from his mouth and stuck it on the gate lantern, calling it ‘disgusting’ but saying they did not want to make a fuss.
The CCTV also showed him driving off without wearing his seatbelt and with mail on the front passenger seat.
Mr Harvey was called in and admitted the seatbelt and mail offences but lied about the chewing gum incident because he ‘panicked’.
But he later said it had been ‘a stupid decision’, said he had done it a couple of times before and offered to apologise to the customer.
The Scottish employment tribunal heard evidence that 50% of posties drive around on their rounds without wearing seat belts every day
But bosses did not follow the proper procedure and Mr Harvey was suspended and later sacked.
The Scottish employment tribunal heard evidence that 50% of posties drive around on their rounds without wearing seat belts every day.
The tribunal panel found the postman to be a credible witness and ruled he was unfairly dismissed and he was paid £17,244 compensation.

He sounds like an idiot but I don't think he deserved to be sacked.

It's very disrespectful to leave saliva covered chewing gum, he's only sorry he got caught otherwise he wouldn't have "offered to apologise" at all.
It is right to sack him for lying and gross misconduct, he only got lucky that RM cocked up by not following their own procedures.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

To be fair he's lost his job and £17k sounds like a lot but you can burn through that in 6 months easy if you don't have another job.he only got lucky
Royal Mail got a deserved £17k kick in the balls because their managers aren't even competent enough to sack someone properly.
I wonder what happened to the manager in question?

Very True £17K won't stretch that far if you sit on your arse. Hopefully he'll get another job.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑20 Mar 2022, 12:04To be fair he's lost his job and £17k sounds like a lot but you can burn through that in 6 months easy if you don't have another job.

Never ceases to amaze me how many times Managers cock up the paperwork when it comes to trying to sack people.
I'm no Company Man but there's Posties out there that deserve the sack for some of the antics they get up to (if not jail). It's galling to see these assholes escape dismissal over serious disciplinary matters because some manager doesn't fill in the paperwork correctly. Ironically the CWU normally pulls out all the stops to keep these asssholes in the job.

Yet people at our place bring back mail and finish two hours early they’ve also found mail in the cab and loads of d2d in the back of the van, also swearing at a customer and yet nothing is done about it!

It's more than managerial incompetence with Royal Mail, a lot of them stupidly break the rules to secure a conviction. In that case the customer dropped the complaint but everyone failed to mention that throughout the process. It's ingrained in the appeal managers to use every trick in the book to justify a rejection. Take that particular appeals manager, I've noted a lot of his previous decisions be overturned at tribunal. Year after year the same appeals people being called out for their own failings, yet still they soldier on keeping up the bad work.
