Royal Mail employees help uncover drug dealer after smelling parcel addressed to him

The court heard how Daniel Lloyd Taylor, 25, had got himself into a significant debt and had to pay it off.

A drug dealer was caught after Royal Mail employees smelt a parcel at their depot and informed police.

The package was addressed to Daniel Lloyd Taylor, 25, and passed through a sorting office on its way to his home.

However, when postal workers raised the alarm, officers raided his house and found evidence of drug dealing in cannabis which could have earned him up to £17,000, North Wales Live writes.

Taylor, of Anglesey, Wales, pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of the Class B drug cannabis.

On March 3, a judge at Caernarfon Crown Court said that the offences had been on a large scale and sentenced him to ten months behind bars.

Prosecutor Paulinus Barnes said North Wales Police were alerted by Royal Mail staff to a suspicious package at their Llangefni sorting depot on October 22, 2020.

He said it smelt strongly of cannabis and was addressed to the defendant Taylor.

Police arrived and found it contained 14 tubs of cannabis worth £100 each. The total potential yield was therefore £1,400.

Officers went to Taylor's home and found more cannabis weighing just over 1.5kilos - worth up to £15,750 - and £3,105 in cash.

Taylor gave no comment answers to questions when interviewed.

Philip Clemo, defending, said his client had been a cannabis addict and got into a substantial debt. He was left with "little option" but to work it off.

He noted that since the offences in 2020 Taylor has become a father and helps with childcare. His ex-partner has seven children.

He also "idolises" his grandmother who has skin cancer and is going into Ysbyty Glan Clwyd today for treatment on her face.

He said the defendant is "helpful and decent", adding: "Here is a man who now has a stake in society, perhaps more than before."

The judge His Honour Niclas Parry said Taylor has "excellent references" and declared: "What a waste!"

But he had been given a chance by a previous court yet been involved in drugs on a "big scale", potentially worth £17,000.

He jailed Taylor for ten months each for being concerned in the supply of cannabis and possessing cannabis with intent to supply, the sentences to run concurrently.
