Royal Mail reports abysmal Quality of Service results

Delivering just 76.8% of its First Class mail the next working day, Royal Mail’s third quarter Quality of Service lends proof to the media’s reporting of its poor service over Christmas.

Some 92.5% of Royal Mail’s First Class mail made it within two days – still below the target for its next day delivery. Additionally, Second Class mail made it 93.8% within three working days.

The postal operator blamed a combination of covid – which led to 15,000 staff off sick or isolating at different times – coming in the season of peak demand. In some local offices, Royal Mail claims, up to a third of its staff were off at any one time.

Apologising for its poor service, the postal operator said that it invested more than £340 million in overtime, additional temporary staff as well as sick pay. It also claims that it has seen things steadily improve in recent weeks. That may be borne out in the next quarterly report.

Ricky McAulay, Operations Development Director, Royal Mail said: “It has been a challenging period and I would like to apologise to any of our customers who have experienced delays in their local areas recently. Improving service levels is our number one priority and having invested over £340 million on overtime, additional temporary staff, sick pay and targeted support for the offices most impacted, I’m pleased to say the situation is improving. I would like to thank our customers for their patience and of course our postmen and women for their continued hard work and dedication.”

We failed/partially failed 75% of the duties in our unit on Saturday.
I don't know where Mr Macaulay has been sending his targeted help but it certainly isn't anywhere near us.
I don't see the situation improving either despite his reassurances.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Lots of reports of an overtime ban across the offices. The approach seems to be that the pandemic has cost us £340 million recently so let's concentrate on clawing some of it back. The service levels and clearance rates are way down the priority list.

12 van sharing pairings in our office. Today on 5 of them only one side went out, but 4 of them had all the Tracked covered on the duty that didn't go out. There are a few off sick at the moment but the underlying cause is vacancies that are not being filled.

If there is any discussion with a manager about what is being taken, the manager says every time to concentrate on Tracked and to bring back mail if need be. RM have no interest in delivering letters.

Congratulations to Super Si and the whole board for destroying a once decent and respected company - plus special mention to Terry Bullshitter and the top level of the CWU for ignoring the blatant reality of what is going on.

The management is just hopeless. We’re just going round in circles with nothing being achieved. The duties are still too big since our revision went live last year and the managers are fully aware of this but continue to do the square root of f**k all about it. All they’ve got left is their bully boy tactics which only lowers the morale further and more work gets brought back. Staffing levels are woeful as people either leave or go on the sick . Let’s face it people just don’t want to come into this hell hole.

Perhaps it’s all being done deliberately. They’re certainly not doing anything to improve the situation.

No bonus this year. Just a payoff for most of the DOM's that's well overdue
