London postman blames Royal Mail delays on depot backlogs

Postal staff have been out on London's streets throughout the pandemic, at all hours, in all weather.

Why then are Londoners complaining of weeks-long delays to their mail?

BBC London has obtained footage from a whistle-blower of letters dumped and left for days, and even weeks, in Royal Mail depots.

The frustrated postman has explained no cover has been brought in for staff sickness, so letters are just left to pile up.

Royal Mail has been contacted for comment.

BBC London has been reporting on the problems with post, particularly over the festive period, for the past couple of years.

The whistle-blower spoke to BBC London anonymously, for fear of losing his job, and said he felt the service was letting customers down because if somebody went off sick "those letters won't get done".

"It can go on for weeks," he said. "They'll just sit there - and this is where it gets frustrating- because you'll just see the work piling up every day."

The postie said that the more expensive tracked parcels were given a higher priority than ordinary post, despite the fact the normal mail, including insurance documents, bills and hospital appointments, may be more urgent.

He said: "All of those are being left aside for the sake of someone getting a box of brushes or a puzzle, or something like that, that had been sent tracked - because it was tracked it was prioritised over everything else."

Another Royal Mail employee told BBC London there were longer-term issues too, with postal rounds becoming unmanageably big.

They said this was due to computer algorithms being used to calculate routes without any human input on the impact of delays such as roadworks or building works.

Royal Mail has said Covid led to temporary staffing shortages in some areas, but targeted local support has been provided and most areas now have a normal service again.

Dirty crud on Workplace wants the whistleblowers sacked...

Trowbridge OPG
Can't our IT dept blow up the pic of the York and get addresses from the mail, then you would if found the whistle-blower. @Simon Thompson

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

What an absolute a**e, whistleblowing is not illegal and it's part of our business standards especially
if the USO (which is part of our legal obligation ie it's the law) is not being complied
with. The minor transgression could be taking the photo on RM property.......

From the Govt. guidelines:
A commitment to emphasise in a whistleblowing policy that victimisation of a
whistleblower is not acceptable. Any instances of victimisation will be taken
seriously and managed appropriatel

Those brown nosers make me feel sick. Try and get the person sacked for telling the truth of what’s going on up and down the Entire country.

The worrying thing is it probably won't take a lot to work out the delivery route from the frame and if the duty holder is a known complainer they've probably got their whistle blower! Although to me those photos just show a normal day in most DO's.

Regarding rushing revisions is it a factor for poor performance like this news article...

Simon 'I'll say it again - the data is the data' Thompson

from what I have seen - no this isn’t a factor - some of the latest ones worked well - some of the earlier ones worked well…

Worth noting - you are 2.9 times more likely to clear your office if you have had a revision versus if you have not - London has by far the lowest % of offices that have completed a revision - we have spent £340m on absence & temporary workers - we had 20,000 temporary workers in January - we have recruited 3,000+ extra posties over the last twelve months....

Anyone thinking of taking a photo inside a DO and sending it to the press is hopefully smart enough not to take an identifiable photo of their own frame. Taking a photo of someone else's frame then means deflecting suspicion onto another colleague, so you'd want to take a photo of as many frames as possible for refuge in numbers.
The machine stops.
