Live traffic updates as M40 southbound closed after lorry overturns

A traffic diversion is in place after the vehicle ended up on its site in the early hours

The M40 motorway in Buckinghamshire is closed today (Saturday, January 8) after a lorry overturned in the early hours of the morning.

The southbound carriageway is shut between Junction 1A (Junction 16 of the M25) and Junction 1 (Denham Roundabout).

The collision and closure were first reported at around 3.19am - with a traffic diversion in place via the hollow triangle signs.

The driver of the lorry suffered minor injuries.

One lane is also closed northbound to assist with the recovery.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson: "Lorry has overturned blocking all four lanes. Driver has escaped with minor injuries.

"Highways England are on scene and will be releasing traffic as soon as possible. Likely to be closed for sometime. Please plan ahead."

I know the driver, he’s not agency and the tachometer recorded over 50mph as he exited the roundabout.

A lot of companies seem to use double stackers now, not just RM and couriers

Iv'e heard he was from NDC. Where he turned over is a right hand bend with an adverse camber before the roundabout. With the road layout beforehand coming off the 62 and traffic lights, he would struggle to get it up to 40. Anything over 20 mph around that bend is just silly.

He’s always in a rush to get anywhere ! Don’t get why folk have to be trying to get these vehicles around bends ‘n’ islands a little faster each time. The speed at which you can go round the fastest is that what you managed the time before it all went wrong ! And just because can get round at “x”mph day in day out doesn’t help if tomorrow there’s a diesel spill there. And all to gain a few seconds of time. Apparently he was fortunate the barrier prevented the vehicle disappearing down the bank.

We’re quite happy for you to overtake the double deckers as quickly as you can ! Don’t like having to watch folk loitering alongside, if summat large is overtaking but taking their time i’d usually back off a bit to let them get by, as long as there’s nothing tailgating me, which there usually is !
Most have got the same footprint as single deck trailers, so no need to be worried about the extra size - it’s all in the air ! Exception is the 110’s they’re another 6ft in length. Happy motoring.

Yes, tachograph, my mistake. Don’t deny it was at least careless, as we are professional drivers the opinion of manager and possibly police will be less sympathetic I feel.

Odd how the rear offside fender is damaged on the trailer. I wonder whether another vehicle was involved in this.

Accountability is one thing, but all incidents are multifactoral and just accepting that the speed limit was being exceeded (if that is indeed true/the case here) without fully examining the underlying factors into why this was, is just a "wasted accident". All events, RTA's, personal injury etc, all cost money. Once they occur therefore there is duty to investigate fully and ensure that the investigation can ring every conceiveable drop of learning from it and that the outputs are fed back to the workforce, process/system, vehicle design etc.

Personally at this time of day, Id want to understand if fatigue was in any way a contributory factor? - Similarly had there been any delay in departing at the starting Depot? Any crossed words with colleagues/management beforehand etc. - So many variables that to do it justice reallt does takes days of thorough investigation and questioning of a wide range of people and not just the driver.

I agree as the other poster notes, the damage on the upper side is from something, how and why?

Just to be clear, many of the comments above refer to the incident approaching NW, which we seem to know more about !
