Maybe the way forward is to split up normal post and Downstream/advertising into twice a week service ie Monday and Thursday.
Working in a DO, what I can't understand is why we now have much shorter Tuesday attendance, which seems to indicate there are not enough staff/ or mail in the mail centres, ie on the Monday. Can any one from a mail centre (ours is Manchester) confirm this?
Surely it would be easier all round to have 8 hour attendance every day, and anyone going over, book the ot on those days. Mailsort could, and should in my oppinion, be streamed. How many customers, (i'm talking about the ones who post mail now) realise that their mail is held in a warehouse untill near the end of the week before hitting the streets for delivery? It's very hard for the DOMs to juggle hours to accommodate this practice and i'm sure there will be some who could be failing to achieve their goals through no fault of their own.

In a statement to the Harrogate Advertiser a spokesman for Royal Mail said mail for the Harrogate postcode area was sorted in Leeds and final mail did not arrive at the Harrogate delivery office until 9.45 each day.

Royal Mail's delivery obligations are agreed with our regulator, Postcomm," he said, adding the previously stated response that customers could pay for a timed delivery or collect their mail from the delivery office themselves after 8.30am.

How can you collect mail anytime after 8.30am if it doesn t arrive untill 9.45am each day. What am I missing here?

Problem is, that these later start times and working till end time has NOTHING to do with customer service or the unbelievable claims regarding european speed laws.

It was Crozier and Leighton f****d off with seeing posties finish early. Nothing more nothing less.

But dont forget we agreed to this (majority vote, before you all post "I DIDN'T") all for an inflation matching pay rise. Nice one.

Got in one with making time . Sounds like somebody trying to impress Leighton or his influence .Senior Management were very split during the dispute and Leighton soon dissapeared when he realized RM wasn't a supermarket !

Word was, Crozier and some senior managers tried to gang up on Leighton .

Walmart have an obession with Time Theft , a ASDA worker took ASDA to court for unfair dismissal for Time Theft , he had to take time out to take prescribed medication but the Security Video showing him taking his tablets, "mysteriously went missing ".

He won a £18,000 settlement .

The other "coincidence " was Crozier taking a pasting in The Tory Papers as they've a problem with him nearly getting the sack with The Telegraph for fiddling the sales figures and the supposed "lesson in humility " that he learnt :funneh :funneh

Then the ex Ops Director ( the Scottish Posties Friend ) got a load of stuff spun about 72 variations of the same thing which only were used in out of the way places a long time ago with Spanish Practices . Next thing, all the HYS in on line papers were about posties skivving off early , you can always smell Management on them as they're all parroting off the same thing and laying it on too thick ; to turn Public Opinion against staff , and that pious, smug self righteous Prat, Crozier pontificating in the papers . :cfo :cfo :cfo

Re Heapsy -Mail Centres are badly geared at the best of times, nor is there any cooperation with the DO's that take their stuff & are solely concerned with the final evening 1C final despatch

Re Greynut the 0945 time is to cover MC's for what used to be 2nd Delivery items , with the Transport review , losing the trains etc , everything comes in later on the night shift

Delivery offices are always getting the wrong end of the stick. It should be the mail centres cooperating with them. That's why the hours don't fit the job.

We don't have any say on arrival times into the MCs. If anything I think that the final dispatch times will be made at least half an hour later soon. It seems like all the mail arrives later now and I don't think that';s down to traffic on the roads

I hope you're wrong about that. I can see even more duties failing because people wont work later. Only time will tell.

I think it will happen. Once the remaining Xmas casuals are gone we'll be back to Tracked struggling to clear. By making the final dispatches at least half an hour later, the Tracked shouldn't then struggle every night. It would also mean that the processing of wave 2 on the CSSs and iLSMs could start later so a higher % of mech mail would get walk sorted/sequenced (supposed to be 50% of the batches sequenced and the other half walk sorted)

Well, thank you for the MC point of view.

Now please try to understand our view instead of always countering with "well MCs can't". You make it sound like MCs can't/won't change so DOs have to. It's very frustrating to hear every time.

The amount of savings they could make if they had a computer system that tells you when a truck has left, and what it has onboard, is ridiculous. The military had that technology in the 80s.

If both MCs and Dos worked together efficiency would improve. Communication would help with that as well, but at the moment MCs can't communicate with DOs, which in the information age is embarrassing.

Over Xmas we had 600s turning up after our own walks were due to leave, which led to failures. Did we get warned - Nope.

That would require absolutely every last thing, letter, flat and packet being scanned, and there's no way in hell that we'd have the time to scan every last item. We'd also need probably at least 4 times the number of PDAs that we have now. If they had all that data then we'd potentially be back to the issue of dynamically generated walks. Different walks would get partially or fully lapsed each day and different walks would get different lapsing added to them each day.

Only SDs get scanned out to DOs. We stopped scanning other work to the DOs (the old system where you'd scan a mail stream (each mail type/DO combination was a separate stream and a part fill) probably 2 or 3 years ago. Whenever it was that traffic recording moved over to being done on the PDAs

During Xmas pressure the lorries get sent out as soon as they're full, doesn't matter what time of the day it is. We don't have the room to hold the stuff to the next day. AFAIK distribution don't record what time lorries depart at or where they're going

No it wouldn't, you only count the yorkies eg.

1 Waggon leaving 0450

4 tracked
5 oversize
3 letters
3 Specials

(that's all we need)

Okay, so its worse than I thought they have gone back a stage. In the information age, it should be automatic and easy to report to a DO what is heading their way.

Guess what DOs don't have a lot of room either. What do MCs want us to do store it outside in all weathers. All that Is happening is you pass the mess down the line to where we can't handle it either. You keep repeating this but it doesn't solve the problem if MCs keep ignoring DOs concerns.

I would be amazed if there is no recording of where lorries are heading or what they have on board. I certainly know they do in Leeds both by talking to the drivers and working in that MC for a time.

What I was looking for was you saying, yes we could communicate better to improve the efficiency overall, but you have come back, again, with MCs cant do that MCs can't do this. You personally may not be trying to frustrate delivery office posties, but you are.

AFAIK distribution don't record what they have on their lorries, all their concerned with is making sure that the lorry isn't overweight. When we moved over to recording traffic on PDAs we stopped recording what yorks of what streams are heading to what DOs. I can't see us going back to doing so, we don't even do part fills anymore.

When we get a lorry heading towards us from another MC or an RDC, we don't get a breakdown of how many yorks of each type of mail, we just get the total number of yorks on the lorry that there are.

We don't have the room to store work outside and leaving the lorries on the bays isn't an option as the same bays are used both by the 600s doing the runs to DOs and the arctics bring work in from the RDCs. Larger MCs will have plenty of storage space, smaller MCs will have very little storage space. One shift's storage area will be another shift's work area. On early shift and especially the late shift, every last bit of floor space will be in use for sorting.

Outside of Xmas pressure the lorries doing the DO runs have fixed departure times (unless they get blown out, then they'll leave early)

It'd be lock the truck up and leave it in front of the gate.
