Royal Mail deliveries and collections on 1 January 2022

Ofcom has today published a consultation proposing to exempt Royal Mail from deliveries and collections on 1 January 2022, because this falls on a Saturday.

Royal Mail is required to provide a universal postal service, including delivery and collection of letters, six days per week, Monday to Saturday. This obligation does not apply on public holidays.

The 1 January is a public holiday. However, this date falls on a Saturday in 2022. Therefore the following Monday has been designated as the official public holiday.

Royal Mail has asked to be exempt from these obligations on 1 January 2022, as well as on the substituted bank holiday Monday. We are proposing to grant this exception.

Today’s consultation closes on 13 December, and we intend to publish our decision as soon as possible after this.

The rules on public holidays falling on the weekend are pretty ridiculous. The assumption is that you're not working on a Saturday so in order to benefit from the holiday it has to be shifted to the next day of the working week (implied to be Monday to Friday). But we do work Saturdays so the public holiday on the 1st should stand and the 3rd would be a normal Monday. We're forever being told we have to be out there will into Saturday afternoon because it's 'a normal working day'.
