An eyewitness has described the “horrendous” sound made when a Royal Mail post box was damaged in a collision on Forest Road West in Radford.

A cast iron post box was left shattered into several large pieces with a large shard of metal sticking out of the base when an unknown lorry is said to have reversed into it by mistake.

The witness said the incident happened close to the Nottinghamshire Deaf Society building.

The incident took place at around 2:30pm on Monday August 16th.

Julia McKirgan, who was visiting a friend who lives at Miller’s House Forest Road West, opposite the site of the post box, said that the aftermath of the smash left a dangerous spike of metal on the pavement.

She said: “I was visiting a friend who lives at Miller’s House. I saw a skip lorry drive into Lawson Street, and going into Lawson Street found he couldn’t get down there and when he came back out he hit the post box.

"There was a huge noise. It was horrendous.

“I hope they’re not going to leave it like that. I think it needs to be sorted out.”

Ms McKirgan immediately reported the incident to the police, who attended the scene shortly afterwards. She said that at around 6am this morning, Tuesday August 17th, she heard the sounds of the debris from the smash being cleared away.

Another man, Ian Bartlett, witnessed the smashed post box shortly after the incident and took photographs. He reporting seeing a letter still inside the box

Ms McKirgan added that she believed that police officers took away some letters and posted them into another nearby post box.

Red post boxes belong to Royal Mail, which also has responsibility for repairing and keeping them in working order.

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson told Nottinghamshire Live that Royal Mail had been informed and would be sending a repair team to remove the damaged post box.

Cast iron can get brittle with age, the van driver is in trouble for leaving the scene of an accident and liable for replacement cost.
