I thought you could leave a parcel in a safe place so long as the safe place option is available once barcode is scanned by pda;regardless of whether a safe place option is on the label of parcel ?

Key facts:

Smart doorbells start filming when a motion sensor is triggered - this can be up to 10 metres away – and not simply when you press the bell.
Footage can be recorded by the customer.
Assume that you are being recorded when you are within range of the doorbell. Please ensure that you follow our procedures and are polite at all times.
If the householder asks you to do something with their parcel, make sure you follow the business policies:

• Only leave a parcel if it has a SAFEPLACE instruction on the label.
  Don’t deliver signature products without a signature (it is the poster who has paid for the signature).
  You can deliver to a suggested neighbour – they are more likely to be in and to accept the package.
  If customers are unhappy with what you are able to offer then politely explain that you are following company policies to keep mail secure.

Think the official answer is no because there is no record of the recipient designating a 'safe place' if it's not on the parcel label.

A faded bit of paper sellotaped to the door saying 'Parcels in the greenhouse please' is not an official instruction that can be used
as evidence if a parcel goes missing - and how many toerags passing by can see that bit of paper?

I suppose a recent update to this might be the 'In flight' instruction you might receive at the doorstep when you
scan a tracked item even if it's not printed on the label e.g. 'If I'm not in please leave in the greenhouse'.
In that case it's on record (through the RM Tracking system) and so if you consider the safe place 'safe' then you can leave it,
selecting the safe place and taking a photo.

I would put it in the greenhouse but I would also take a photo of the note on my phone just in case of any comebacks.

Since I've never had an inflight request, I'd be taking everything back!

I'd be annoyed with you then as a customer if you'd chose not you use my Ring doorbell and had taken the parcel back to the DO when I was sat in the house waiting for you to ring. What do you do if you see a house with a RIng fitted instead of a door bell, not even bother walking down the drive?

Thats why i knock, if they can't hear it, its their problem. My experiences with ring dorbells are so far somewhat dissapointing: "I will be home in a minute" type of thing. But its never less than 10 minutes strangely.

Honestly, stopped using them. Even today, knock, door opens after two minutes:

-Did you ring the bell?
-No
-Its a big house, we cant hear you if you dont ring. Next time yoy have to ring.

Somehow they did tho, or must be psychic then.

And somehow there is only a problem with the type of people who will always have a problem. The likes of these that tie the gate together with piece of string and expect you to untie it to enter and tie back on after you leave and spend time on lodging complaints about postie not tying the gate neatly enough instead of fixing it. Or write pieces of paper with ridiculous instructions instead of getting parcel boxes, stuff fixed or arrangements made. My better half and teenagers order heaps of stuff too and somehow i dont have a problem if i get a card because i dont hear the knock. It is the attitude of them more often that our behaviour i think.

Could add to this the situation where they're clearly having a BBQ in the back garden and don't hear you battering at the door!!

Heh, when I follow Royal Mail rules to the letter. I take back at least half the parcels, I'm almost always over my time from writing out all those p739s. And I piss off a load of customers (who simply book redeliveries adding more wasted time).

Similar to many Royal Mail practices, like relying on OT, or coming in early, skipping breaks. If everybody played by the official rules for a week, the system would fall apart.

Surely it depends where your round is situated, a nice rural one where theft is non existent and you can probably "step" everything, an inner city one and you can't "step" anything as it'll most likely be stolen once the local yobs get wind of what you are doing.

I try to find somewhere to leave them, (nice area, mainly detached houses) never had a complaint in 10 years on this round, no re-deliveries either.

Possibly the worst advice I've ever read on here.

Might as well advise driving around without seat belt and leave engine running whilst out van etc.
