Mark Cox hailed the 'Best Postie in Sheffield' just loves delivering smiles to everyone's front door

Mark Cox is adored by residents

A postman has been hailed a local legend for bringing joy and laughter to the residents of a Sheffield suburb for more than a decade.

Mark Cox, 41, from Chapeltown has become an internet sensation when he decided to give a flower to one of his customers, a woman who was celebrating her 90th birthday.

The photo of him standing at the lady’s doorstep while holding a bouquet of flowers has been circulating in Facebook groups for days.

Everyone is in awe of Mark, who told Yorkshire Live he did not know about the post taking off online as he did not have a Facebook profile until Sunday.

When he saw the likes and the reaction, he said his jaw dropped.

He said: “It is crazy because I only do my job, and people are saying how nice it is what I am doing. It makes it worthwhile.

“I am really moved to be honest with you. All I did was just to make somebody’s day a bit special.

“It only cost me £10 to make her day."

Mark added he did not do it for any sort of appreciation; as a former Navy man, he loves being out and about and chats with everyone who is up for it.

Mark was in the Navy for ten years and then got his first job as a postman down South in Gosport, a little town next to Portsmouth.

He then got transferred back to Sheffield and he never looked back. He said he loves his job, despite the ups and downs.

He said: “I always wanted to work outdoors – that is all I have ever been used to. I am not for being indoors.

“I love being around people, as I am a very talkative person. I try to make sure I always have time for everyone.

“The fact that I can be out there on my own, and talk to the residents is really great. On the other hand, the weather could make it really hard – this winter was wet, cold and icy.”

The job is not easy. A postman, especially a good one, needs a number of skills to succeed – having these attributes during the coronavirus pandemic became even more important.

Mark said: “You need to be kind and polite, first and foremost. You need to speak to somebody the way you would like to be spoken to. That is very important. Also, you have to be trustworthy.

“You handle people’s mails, parcels, information and money – people have a lot of trust in you.

“Some people are alone all day, and you can see them in the window looking for you.

“You need to be ready to be polite because maybe you are the only person they see for the entire week – especially this time when you cannot meet your family.”

Apart from being kind, Mark has a funny side too. On special occasions, such as Christmas, Easter or Halloween, he tends to dress up to entertain people.

Behind the tradition, though, lies a family tragedy. Mark lost his mum on Christmas Day.

Mark said: “If I make somebody laugh, then it makes me happy. Otherwise, I would struggle too. I lost my mum on Christmas Day so, I know what it means not having your family around.

“So, I wear a hat or dress up. This keeps me going, really. It makes me happy to see people smiling. Even some tend to ask what I am going to wear this time. It is brilliant.”

It surely is not a coincidence everybody loves “Sheffield’s best postie.”

A resident, Victoria Hicks, 49, from Burncross, Sheffield, said: “I bumped into him close Christmas. It was going dark, and he was still out delivering.

“I asked him: ‘Why are you working so late?’, to which he replied ‘while I got a post in my bag I will keep going! No one will be without their mail or parcels.’”

“Honestly, I cannot say how much he cheers everyone up.”

Funny how these hero posties always manage to have someone on hand to photograph their exploits.

Go one in our office, spends half his shift on facebook highlighting all the fantastic work he does for 'his' customers, when in reality he does no better job or goes to anymore effort than any of the day off covers or leave reserves who cover his round.

Quite sad reading, he’s obviously single, got no mates, works his days off & holidays, nothing to go home for, stays out all day, every office got them.
